borderline personality disorder

Posted by jeanette on November 27, 2003, at 21:50:22

i was just wondering if there's anyone out there with this diagnosis. all of the posts i can find are very old~ i'm 27, and i was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and dysthymia. i'm currently taking 20mg of prozac which did NOTHING on it's own, and 900mg of lithium. i've been having more frequent migranes lately- actually i've had a headache for 2 weeks now, but since i'm now taking prozac i can't take any of the prescription migrane meds because they act off seratonin and i can't take my ever faithfull excedrin migrane because of the caffiene and the lithium! i think i'm gonna drop the prozac. any advice?

I have a diagnosis of bipolar,Adhd(I believe the adhd symptoms are from the bipolar DX). I think next time I see my PDOC she will DX me w/ borderline personality disorder. I never know what the heck is wrong me. Lithium is a great drug. There are other drugs that dont require blood level checks or negative Cafiene effects. My pdoc recently started me on Triliptal to help stabilize my mood. It has helped me tremondously and I havnt had any negative side effects. Maybe Im lucky. Maybe my pdoc is really a good one. Im begining to trust her. She at least got me on the right path. My px bottle only says "use alcohol w/ caution". I also take Wellbutrin SR 400mgs. I feel like Cindy is back!!! Im pretty close anyway(I hope). I dont know of about how SSRI interact with migraine meds. Im sure we can figure out what will work for you.
Hang tight, I understand your frustration, as do many of us @ PB.
Best Wishes & Lots Of Love,
Cindy

Hi,

The drug I found worked most with my BPD was Zyprexa.. the Atypicals seem to work OK for most of the BPD people I know (an awful lot!), though it only controls some of the more problematic symptoms.

In the long term, I know many people that have had success with DBT.

I do alot of work raising awareness etc of BPD in the UK with a group based here. Our website is http://www.BorderlineUK.co.uk

Good luck

Nikki x

I, personally, found CBT a real life saver.. and i know some social workers are trained for this too.

I can't get DBT either.. tis still pretty rare in the UK, though my area did do it.. but have now stopped it to set up a Psychodinamic based "Borderline Project"!

Good luck. And never let anyone say this is untreatable!

Jeanette, are you in the U.S.? I live in AZ and our wellfare for medical is very good. I get to see a therapist about every 6 weeks(there is a great demand and only so many therapists and doctors)However, there is an 8 time cap. Then I have to be well. After my inital analysis with the the psychiatrist. I see the now see her every 2-3 months for med checks. I pay nothing for my prescriptions. 400mgs Wellbutrin & ?mgs of Trileptal. I make $9.50 an hour and work 40 hours every week.
You should look into it. Im 27 years old too. I have an amazing 3 year old son. Good Luck
Best Wishes & Lots of Love,
Cindy

Hi Jeanette. If you would like to discuss the non-medication aspects of borderline personality disorder, you might want to check out Psychological Babble.

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/psycho/

So you can't take the triptans while you're taking an SSRI? Ouch. Sorry to hear that.

BPD over here!!!!

Effexor initally worked to get me to a "good" place and I took depakote too. Long story short...I am now on Wellbutrin (150 mgs 2X daily) and take no mood stabilizer. Initially I worked with a therapist who specialized in treating BPD ...I feel that this part (the therapy with a qualified BPD therapist) is CRUCIAL to getting control of your life if you are suffering from BPD. Due to the great therapy I got with this man I haven't done any 'head-bangin' in over a year and my attitude is soooo much better. I really like the Wellbutrin and the effects it's having on me.

Good luck to you. There are alot of BPD support groups/boards out there...You just have to do a search for them on the web.

Pamela
