ZOLOFT and male libido, s*xual function, etc.

Posted by Janelle on November 22, 2003, at 20:46:23

I know that the SSRI's in general are known for what the politically correct term (I suppose) "s*xual side effects" and I've heard from the grapevine that some may be worse than others.

Any of the men out there (or women who have knowledge) know what the deal is with Zoloft?

I know a man who's on it and from what he's told me (we are very close friends), he does not seem to have much of those *male s*xual problems".

However, he seems to think he does and wants to switch off Zoloft (to some other a-d), but the Zoloft is really helping him.

I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it and feel he should stay on Zoloft since he's managing okay in the *male department*.

What do people out there think? Any and all answers greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What problems does he think he's having? Zoloft actually *saved* my sex-life. For my entire life I've suffered from being quite a bit shall we say, premature, in the bedroom. Now at 150mg/d I can finally last as long as a normal person! I went from a 30sec man to a 10min man.. :-) Also, I love that I can just go to any GP and get a script for depression and save myself the embarresment.

I take Zoloft 50mg a day and I have trouble having orgasm. Sometimes I canīt. The worst for me is the loose of sensibility in the genital. In my case, I think this is the main reason for not having the orgasm. I asked my doctor for Wellbutrin and he said I would be more anxious than I am.
I tryed many different medications not to have sexual dysfunction, they didnīt work, then I got back to Zoloft. If your friend wonīt take the medication for a long time, I would suggest your friend to stay on Zoloft for some more time. It is hard!!! But may be worthy.
I myself donīt know what to do now. I am very confused. I would like to stop taking it, but I canīt do anything if I donīt take medication. No sex too, because I donīt feel well to meet people, or to have pleasure with anything else. When I take Zoloft, everything is good, but sex. If I donīt take it everything is bad!
I would like to know how people that have this some problem are doing.

>All of the SSRIs have a potential for ejaculation or libido problems. There is no way to be sure that switching to another SSRI will solve the problem. Although Zoloft can definitely have a negative effect, drop out rates or failure on the drug due to sexual side effects are lower than say with Paxil, and according to some of the literature only about 2% with Zoloft. I would advise sticking with the Zoloft if it is working, and augment with a little wellbutrin, or trazodone in the evening to help with sexual difficulties

Maybe he's not having the "physical" problem with sex. Maybe it's the lost mental edge making it happen? My sex life went down the tubes with Zoloft but that's because I was conned out of my ADD diagnosis so I became complacent with mediocrity. At first there was this placebo effect and I was making out with all of these girls but then the follow through wasn't there if you know what I mean. Then I lost my crappy job (actually got fired for once), Quit school eventually. But a lot of that could have been avoided if I'd stayed on a minimal dose and taken some ADD stuff I guess. Anyway, you could help him to make sure he's not talking about the mental edge. Some famous dude said inteligence is the ultimate aphrodisiac.

Zoloft, was devasting to me. Let's not beat around the bush. It was hard for me to have an erection. I did not have any problem before and this was before Viagra. I switched to Wellbutrin, which seemed to help in both areas.

Now, if I were to try Zoloft today, I might see how Viagra or some of the newer Male enhancement drugs work while using Zoloft. I just started Effexor Xr and there are some problems with that drug also, It's tough having the big "O".
