My pdoc has diagnosed me as having profound depression. Instead of prescribing an antidepressant he told me to increase my dosage of Zyprexa from 1.25 mg to 5 mg, nightly. Has anyone else experienced this? I have bipolar disorder.

I also have Bipolar, and have taken Zyprexa to bring manic episodes under control, but never for depression. It is a very sedating drug, and I tend to think it would worsen depression. Are you taking any antidepressants? I think antidepressants and mood stabilizers are what you probably need.

I have to disagree...I believe it usually makes depression better, esp if taken with another serotonergic AD. For some, it is a stand alone AD like Risperidone (this drug can really work great for depression). I agree, it is sedating, but this usually wears off. But, I have seen some wonderful responses from Zyprexa- for depression, OCD, bipolar etc...

> Are you taking any antidepressants? I think antidepressants and mood stabilizers are what you probably need.I took Wellbutrin for many years, then replaced it with Strattera last Spring. I also take lithium.
My pdoc wants me off the Strattera and the Abilify and to take just the Zyprexa, 5mg. He says that this will arrest the depression. But, I feel that the Zyprexa is making me more and more depressed. I'm drowning, I can't breathe and the world has turned eerily silent. I feel hopelessly depressed.

Zyprexa helped for 1 day with the depression but after that it wore off.
I don't think it's really shown in the studies to help with depression much, only mania.
