Sure it works, but it is very addictive. You are better off with Trazadone (generic Desyrel). It works really well and is not addictive. I take 25mg of Trazadone when I have insomnia. Alternatively, I sometimes take two over-the-counter Benadryl, if my allergies are acting up any way. This works pretty well.

Talk to your doctor.

I disagree vehemently. "addictive" is a loaded term. It depends on the person. I think it is malpractice to give someone a "big gun" like Trazodone, which is VERY bad for you and harmful to your organs, when a benzodiazepine, which is much safer, will work better.

Yes, I tried Lorazepam for insomnia, didn't work (nm) » Tepiaca

Neither trazadone nor lorazepam should be taken for insomnia Without a doctor's advice and prescirption. Two Bendadryls at bedtime is worth a try, if one does not want to visit a doctor.

I am currently taking lorazepam for anxiety at night and insomnia (trouble falling asleep and then waking up too early) It is the only thing that works for me to help both of these problems. fortunately I have been taking it for a while and have not had to increase the dose yet to get the same effects. it lays me out pretty well at night

i imagine some people can't sleep cuz they're not tired, and others can't sleep because they're actually anxious (laying in bed worrying about things)... in the latter case, perhaps a benzo is a good idea, in the former perhaps it is not

That stuff kicked my "hind end".
Just a no feeling, blind trip.

I do think they are fine every now and then for insomnia, just not on an ongoing basis. My ENT prescribed Lorazepam (aka Ativan) for me 2 years ago after I had sinus surgery "just in case" I was uncomfortable. (The sinus packing freaks many people out.) Over the last 2 years I've used up about half of the 30 he gave me, but only on those nights that I just couldn't turn my brain off or I felt intensely aggravated or worried. They sure did help me calm down and pleasantly fall asleep. I would not advise anyone taking them every night unless they absolutely had to because they really are a fine, fine drug and one can get happily hooked on them. But, then again, I am not a medical professional yadda yadda yadda. I've hoarded mine because it's very hard to find a PCP who is willing to prescribe them (or Xanax) due to their addictive tendency.

I have a sleep disorder and being that it is difficult to have them assessed and diagnosed, I am pretty well versed in them. There are a few things that have been mentioned in these postings that are stricking me as curious and may lead me to believe that you do not need depressants to get to sleep. What exactly are your symptoms. Sleep disorders are very commonly misdiagnosed and general practitioners are not educated in most of them.

By the way, I live with neurological sleep-related conditions and I am a pre-med student with extreme interest (and a little background) in neurology. The symptoms of the those who have posted here are catching my interest.

This has been my miracle drug! It is the only thing that gets rid of my anxiety and helps me sleep. I have been taken off of it, to my dismay, so be careful. Of course, I have discovered Prescription RX...

Neurological? I get weird vibrations all throughout my body (sometimes feels like they are coming up my throat like a cat's purr). They keep telling me it is prob. just anxiety. I wonder. What kind of symptoms do you have. Any vibes?

No, I haven't. I had a cat scan, though, and they didn't find anything wrong with my brain. I have been curious if I should have an EEG, though, but I feel like a hypochondriac already. :)
