Antidepressants - carcinogens?

Posted by Penny on October 28, 2003, at 7:40:54

I get the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry e-lerts by email every so often, and in today's edition, there was a link to the following abstract, about a possible connection between antidepressants (particularly TCAs) and cancer:

http://www.psychiatrist.com/abstracts/200310/100301.htm

I wasn't even aware this was a possibility, though I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise either, really. And, of course, nothing has been PROVEN yet.

Anyone know anything about this?

P

60 years on TCA's not enough ??

Well, I was wondering if anyone else had done such studies. And I guess I could find that out for myself.

And I won't post anything more. I was just going by the study abstract. Excuse my ignorance.

Interesting article, thanks for sharing it. I have looked up anti-psychotics and found suggestive studies like this. I do know that alcohol abuse is implicated in varied cancers, and valium abuse is associated with breast cancer. Anecdotally, I had two relatives (one related/one marriage) and they both sank down tons of Valium. I do really mean that they abused the stuff. Very sadly, they both died in their 50s, one right after the other, of stomach cancers. They did also smoke, though.

My message? Only take meds if you have to. Whenever there is a way to get away without, that's what I'd do. But I do realize now that my life most likely will be shortened by a long shot if I don't take meds--so I'm in for the duration.

If carcinogens scare you, you better not give your children Disney pjama's to wear, or give them anything to eat on or in any thing made with plastic. Don't use any type of beauty product, just about everything we eat now-a-days, is supposed to cause cancer.

My point is that, even breathing will cause cancer. Personally, I will take an anti-depressant or tranq to try and get a grip on my depression/anxiety and extreme stress, rather than try and will it away, because that just doesn't work for me. Plus, I just read an article were depression/anxiety itself is supposed to increase your chances of cancer. So damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Penny, Please keep posting, and ignore the think-they-know-it-alls! Most everyone does anyway!

Please be sensitive to the feelings of others and don't post anything that could lead them to feel accused or put down, thanks.

Penny, I recall this issue being raised in the excellent book, "Listening to Prozac". I greatly understand your concerns. The way I have kind-of taken is, if we only live for say an average of 80 or so years, I'd rather live those years somewhat more content than if I was without medication. I also understand many other medications that people have to take, often for a lifetime, have their carcinogenic risks as well. Never mind the amount of air pollutants, contaminants in our water, and stuff in our food.

That's just my belief anyways.

Best as always,
Jay

I wouldn't worry too much -- the results provided in the abstract seem very mixed, and as another poster pointed out, untreated depression may in itself be a risk factor for cancer. The evidence for that is mounting. Besides, I'd rather have a shorter, happier life with meds than a longer, miserable one.

Please forgive me for my "uncivil" response.

I was posting in response to the rude "You are excused" by stjames, and no other post. That reply was quite "uncivil" and uneccessary, and directed right toward Penny to make her feel stupid for apologizing for her post. If that isn't uncivil, I don't know what is.

Again, please disregard my uncivil post.

First of all I asked a simple question, asked
simply. Penny was way over the top in her response; she assumed a tone that was not in my message. I posted a logical response to her post and she got bent out of shape.

When people asked to be excused (when they blow up) it is polite to excuse them.

Thanks for posting this Penny- this reasearch always interests me. I wouldn't worry too much however about TCAs- they have a preety safe history- although spontaneous death due to cardiac toxicity has been noted (much less than with conventional antipsychotic though). NMS is also a risk with the TCA, Clomipramine. Some other probs I can't remember now. But, as stated, they are preety safe and proven over the long run.

Take care,
Ace.

Please don’t jump to conclusions about others or post anything that could lead them to feel accused. Sorry, but I've asked you to be civil, so now I'm going to block you from posting for a week.
