How do I 'take vacations' from Dexedrine?

Posted by zarathustra on October 28, 2003, at 7:09:36

I am currently taking 10mgs of Dexedrine and self medicating to 20mgs as needed. I havent been able to see the psychiatrist who originally prescribed it 1.5 months ago to ask him to double the dosage. Perhaps it was his intention anyways but he keeps cancelling appointments. Anyways the point is I am not abusing it per-say; I function perfectly on 20mgs taken Q.I.D. If I stick to the 10 which he gave me, it puts me on a rollercoaster between doses.
My question is regarding tolerance. I am very impressed with this med and I want to do everything within my power to have it effective for as long as possible and on the most minimal amount. so, I have been not taking any medication on Sundays. Is this a sufficient amount of time to prevent tolerance? On an irrelevant sidenote, I feel like absolute shit on Those Sundays however I guess thats to be expected.

Thanks, Andrew

You could look into other ways to prevent tolerance from developing -- NMDA antagonists are the best way to go about this. Memantine and acamprosate are good, but expensive (and prescription only). Dextromethorphan however is available OTC in Vicks 44 Cough Formula, Robitussin Maximum Strength Cough, Robitussin CoughGels, et al. I'd suggest taking 15mg of dextromethorphan four times daily -- with each dose of dextroamphetamine. It's been working great for me -- I take DextroStat, just another brand of dextroamphetamine.
