Can anyone help me understand why I am on all these meds? I take 3200mg of Neurontin,25mg Lamictal,1mg of Lorazepam,25mg of Seroquel,600mg Trileptal and I also take an otc nighttime sleep aid. I know I have deep depression and seizures in my eyes. Any help would be good.

Your doctor has a responsibility to explain your medications to you: what symptoms each is expected to help with, what its mode of action is, what side effects you may have, why multiple medications are indicated, etc. I suggest you write out all your questions, such as why he/she chose each drug, and make sure you get all your questions answered.

You're on 3 anticonvulsants and no standard antidepressants. Are you bipolar? Also, 3 of your meds are useful for anxiety problems. Plus the OTC sleep aid. Do you also have anxiety?

Here's a reader's digest version of some generalities:

Lamictal, anticonvulsant, also good for mood stabilization and known for antidepressant properties.

Neurontin, anticonvulsant, gentle anxiolytic properties.

Trileptal, anticonvulsant, mood stabilizer.

Lorazepam. a benzodiazepene. Anxiolytic.

Seroquel. Atypical antipsychotic. Some find it helpful for mood stabilization, help with sleep, and anxiety (more powerful for me than a benzo).

Do you feel your depression is improving? Is the problem with your eyes controlled? (I didn't know seizures could be restricted to the eyes...hmmm)
You can always go to another doctor for a consulting opinion.

I'd go so far as to say that if your doctor doesn't THOROUGHLY take the time to explain why you're on that cocktail, go run for another one. My experience with psychopharmacologists is that they have 15-20 minutes for you, they practice no psychiatry, and they work on "trial and error." Meanwhile, as the errors occur, you pay for the negative side effects of the cocktails of drugs, while they think of what else to try.

My wife was on provigil, lamictal, zyprexa, prozac, and klonopin. They nearly did away with her, and she ended up with akathisia, dyskinesia, and EPS symptoms. There's a book by the chief of the clinic on involuntary movements of the University of Miami that lists all the diagnoses of these conditions that soon take over as the main cause of distress over depression, or whatever you had to begin with.

All antipsychotics, even the atypical ones, are known to cause involuntary movements, and some become irreversible if untreated or unprevented.

If you don't have a condition specified as bipolar, schizoid, or schizophrenia, I would question very severely why you're taking lamictal, Seroquel, etc.

Best to you,

Nickm
