TRAZADONE morning hangover ??

Posted by Janelle on October 17, 2003, at 16:17:14

Although I'm currently on a med that enables me to fall asleep and stay asleep, I have long been curious about Trazadone (I was once given a mere 50mg at night and it did NOTHING).

I've heard that doses in the hundreds (like 300?) are good for inducing sleep, but I've also heard that you wake up with quite a *hangover*/groggy feeling?

Anyone had experience with Trazadone and do/did you or do/did you not wake up still feeling groggy from it?

(I've also heard it has some a-d properties).

Thanks for any and all info.

I was prescribed this by my doc the other day, for depression, panic attacks, chronic anxiety, and insomnia. I took 50mg the first night, it had no effect. Took 150mg last night, ate a yogurt, and by the time I was scraping the bottom of the carton I felt really stoned but without any of the pleasant psycho-active bit. I was even feeling panic that I would be overwhelmed by it. It knocked me out and I woke up twelve hours later at 2pm feeling like I had got drunk the night before. Sore head, cotton wool for brains, unable to do anything. I am no way taking it again it seemed very crude and way too incapacitating for me to take 300mg everyday.

Trazodone IS an antidepressant, technically, but apparently is not very effective on its own. A friend of mine is taking it with Effexor and it's helped her sleep through the night. I thnk she's taking a low dose, maybe 25-75 mg a night. It's not only supposed to be good for sleep, but it's good for DEEP sleep, so I would think it would be a good adjunct to an SSRI or other drug that shortens slow-wave sleep.
