Our 15 yr old son has had 2 diags. but overall looks like paranoid schizophrenia (2.5 months now) He is in a crisis center now where the upped his dose of Zyprexa from 10mg to 15mg and the next day to 20 mg. they added Artane to counteract side effects and when they admitted him 8 days ago they replaced his Klonopin .25 mg with Zoloft 50 mg. They may be ready to discharge him soon. He was having med breakthrough w/ his 10mg Zyprexa, but is it safe to increase the dosage that quickly, especially on a 15 yr old?

zyprexa is prity harmless. He might have problems with tiredness and over eating. I had big probems with thoughs two on 15mgs. My initial dose was 15mgs when I was about 20, so i would say just to look out for thoughs two. I heard of 7 year olds taking at least 5mgs.

I am just learning about detecting med breakthrough and I want to enlist his help in this when he gets home. I realize everyone is different but he was psychomotoring (pacing, shooting hoops or walking back and forth in the pool a total of 2.5 to 3 hrs a day). I have heard he shouldn't do it at all if he is stabilized and also the other that it is normal and shouldn't be a real concern. I will say the day before his episode he shot hoops for 4 hours, only stopping for a drink of water every hour!!!!!!

It should be fairly safe. I have upped my own dosages of Zyprexa and found it to be a very slow onset drug, and the effects don't really kick in until a few days. On the other hand, I am on Seroquel, an antipsychotic like Zyprexa, and within a half hour, it really 'cools' me down.I hope the best for you and your son...mental health is such a struggle. (To put it lightly!..heh.)

I had a similar problem with excess energy in begining psychosis, paceing. I think the problem is when you become fixated with the activity. The zyprexa, when I took it, took this away from me. I will admit I was probably not taking enough in the beginning (10mgs) because I continued to pace a bit on the zyprexa, this went away with time, and eventualy the 10mg dose was right. I had taken the 15mgs, but had to reduce to 10 because I would sleep too much. I do recomend zyprexa about 2-3 hours befor bed, unless over activity is still a big problem.

The truth is probably that stabilization means at least being somewhere in-between not doing it at all and doing it non-stop. It isn't like pneumonia where you either have it or you don't. Usually these things are on a continuum and the best you can hope for is a shifting towards normal. Stabalized doesn't equal cured unfortunately. I wish your son the very best. I was on Zyprexa for a while and it was wonderful for me, though I was taking it as an add on to my SSRI for depression. It does cause incredible weight gain, however weight gain is likely preferable to any psychotic symptoms.

I want to thank everyone who replied to this message. My son is still in the crisis center but I believe he will be home soon. It is much easier to provide support when one knows what to expect. In the past he has been aloof from us more often than not. The last few days he has called us during the hours permitted and conversed as he never has before. I believe soon he will be stabilized and ready to return. We do things together that help bridge the gap between our ages like computer games, swimming shooting hoops
etc. thanks again Dan J.

Just be extra carefull when he gets back that he maintains his improvements. He might think he cured now. That was my mistake, and I ended up right back.
