This just doesn't sound very likely to me. I suppose it's possible, anything is possible.

How long has he been on Celexa? If he's been taking it for a while (say, 2-3 months or more), and he hasn't gotten a response from it, then Celexa is probably just not the right drug for him.

If he has been taking it for only a few weeks or something, the Celexa may just need a bit more time to kick in.

If he has been taking it for a while, and it worked, but then stopped working - then it is merely another case of the "poop out" phenomenon.

From a pharmacological standpoint, there is no reason why oxycodone would counteract Celexa.

And just a side note, I tell ya... if I was taking Oxycontin regularly, I wouldn't even need an anti-depressant. That's just me though.

I'm having a similar problem, though I didn't have it with Oxycontin (hydrocodone), I've had it with oxycodone (Percodan). I've been on Lexapro for 5 months now and fine, and was on hydrocodone for a month and was still okay, but ever since I started Percodan 3x a day about a week ago, I feel like the Lexapro is not as effective. I just increased my dosage of the Lexapro at the end of March to 25 mg, so it isn't poop-out, I don't poop-out that quickly on any dosage (I've been taking ADs for several years, and I usually poop-out on a dosage after two months).

Some people do not feel a lessening of depression on narcotics, some people do. I feel an increase in depression and especially anxiety since I started the Percodan, though I have no choice where any of these meds are concerned -- long story, but this is the best treatment and other options have already failed.

So I don't know what to say for your husband except that I understand, and it may have a lot to do with his metobalism. I will be seeing my pdoc next week, and I am going to ask him if increasing my Lexapro again will be worth it, because I don't want to increase my AD dosage too soon or if it won't solve the problem.

I do not know why the Celexa is not working for your husband but if he has been taking high doses of oxycontin for 3 years there is a possibility that his brain chemistry may have changed.

With these types of powerful pain medications, our bodies can also become very dependent on them, therefore making it difficult to stop. In a way, they can work like an anti-depressant except the effect is immediate.

I agree with Caleb, if I was taking oxycontin I would not need to take an anti depressant.

The lexapro should work considering that oxy affects endorphins and not serintonin. There is a potential that over the 3 years of oxy use that the serintonin transmitters have been modified by either chemical or mental means. This is unlikely though. The more likely situation is that he doesn't think it is working because he is looking for the feel good feeling of oxy, which is COMPLETELY different than the feel good of an anti-depressant. I have had a "fun" run with oxy that almost killed me and was peaking at 400 mg a day oxycodone. I have weaned down to 40 a day and will be off within about a month. I am starting to take lexapro today to deal with the depression that sets in after I quit. The pysical side effects of detoxification aren't even the worst part heh. I know I won't be high when I quit but at least I won't be suicidal.
