SLS - How's the Zonegran?

Posted by Emme on September 9, 2003, at 8:36:39

Hi Scott,

Haven't seen your name in a little while. I hope you are doing well. If I recall correctly, it was you who was starting Zonegran not too long ago. How's it going? If anyone else has some experience with Zonegran, I'd be interested to hear about it.

Hi Emme.

Yes. I began taking Zonegran 200mg about two weeks ago to treat bipolar depression. I guess it's too early to pass judgment, but I am not experiencing anything positive from it. As far as side effects are concerned, I have had asthenia (muscle weekness), feelings of fatigue, and mild hand tremors. These things seem to be getting better with time, though. At least it's not making me feel worse.

Scott,

So no help with the depression from it yet...Are you finding that it has any calming effect?

It's hard to say. I don't think so. I have had some mild anxiety these last few days that I attribute to Effexor.

Well, I'll let you know how 100 mg treats me. I should start it up in a few days or so. We're paring down most of what I've been on, except for Lamictal, clonazepam, and a little atenolol. Then I'm supposed to try adding 100 mg Zonegran. I tried 50 mg, but was taking several other things, so it was hard to say if it was doing anything helpful. My pdoc feels that we're going to need to combine anticonvulsants.

I've been on Zonegran now for over three weeks to treat bipolar depression. Nothing good to report yet. I just moved the dosage up from 200mg to 300mg. I don't like what it is doing to me. It makes me feel fatigued and my muscles feel weak. I think these side effects were beginning to dissipate before I raised the dosage, whereupon they got worse again. I also experience hand tremors.

Still hoping...

After raising the dosage of Zonegran to 300mg, I began to experience severe itching. Being worried about an allergic reaction, my doctor asked that I stop taking it.
