Lexapro and sleep

Posted by Lev on September 6, 2003, at 17:06:18

I am on my 3rd day of using 10mg Lexapro and I'm experiencing the tired feeling that seems rather common for the majority of my day. This does bother me some (mainly concentration), even if it does help my anxiety issues.

My problem is that I can't really sleep at night. I've had problems sleeping for months and the doc said that since my Ambien wasn't really working for me (I didn't want to admit I had more than a sleeping problem) that Lexapro should eventually help because I won't be so nervous and depressed when I try to sleep.

I currently take Lexapro in the morning and I'm starting to wonder... if I take Lexparo at night instead, would there be a good chance that I would sleep better at night and not be so tired during the day? I would just try it myself, but I'd rather not screw up my schedule so early in taking the meds.

And also, after the initial side effects wear off, is it normal to still feel so tired after a few weeks/months?

Sorry if these questions were already brought up, I'm new here and couldn't find them. Thanks for the help, this board is a great resource.

When I took Celexa (Lexapro's predecessor) I told my doctor I felt tired, and he gave me an odd look, and went, "so take it at night." I did and the somnolence stopped.

I changed time of taking dose to try to deal w/this problem. Started in the morning and was falling asleep after dinner. Moved to afternoon, that worked for a while, then couldn't sleep so started taking befor bed. Then was up till all hours of the nite cleaning. So now I'm back to mornings again, have been for a while and it seems to be working for me. Into month 6 @ 20mg.

I have read others posts and moving around the time of dose seems to help some...it's worth a try if you think it might help.

Good luck to you!~~~8|8

If this helps, I am on day 17 of 10mg of Lex. The insomnia seemed to peak at 7-10 days, and then began to diminish. It seems to be gone now, and I am still taking the dose in the mornings.
"This too shall pass" seems to be the watch phrase (although that was a bit hard to believe on day 9).

That happened to me in the early part of treatment with lexparo, but it has passed and I sleep very well now, I hope it passes for you, it should. Lexapro seems to be a great med for depression and anxiety, just give it some time.
Never be ashamed to admit how you feel, I learned the hard way, it wasn't a joyful ride.
Docs are there to help ya.
I tried to take Lexapro at night for the same reason you wonder here but it didn't work *for me*. It seems the 'wiredness' of Lex happened about 6 or so hours after I took it, so I would wake up in the middle of the night, and that was IF I even fell asleep!
I'm on week 6 now of Lexapro and I still feel tired on it at times, but it's a *good* tired, it's more like a mellowness, calming feeling, like the med is supposed to do:-)
I'm not self-medicating like I was before with extra Klonopin or other meds~~Just so I could sleep and not feel. (another story) Hopefully it will pass for you and I wish you the best. Lexapro has really been a great med for me so far.
Good luck and let us know how you are doing!

Here's my 2 cents. Take it at night, sometime between dinner and bed time. Also, take Valerian about an hour before bed time. Valerian does not make one tired, but it makes one feel relaxed. Only take Valerian that says "standardized" on the bottle. Do this for a couple of weeks.

After a couple of weeks, you probably won't need the Valerian as much and you can experiment and see if you do better taking the Lexapro at night or in the morning. It will help your depression to the same degree no matter when you take it.
