I haven't tried the SR version yet, so I'm wondering how does it compare to original Xanax. Let's say I use 0.5 mg 3x daily - then how much Xanax SR should I use to have the same beneficial effects on anxiety and depression?
Are there any "high" and "low" times during the day with SR ? By "low" I mean when original Xanax wears off and by "high" when it kicks in.
Would you go as far as to say that Xanax SR is equal in duration with Klonopin? If yes, then it would be great, because of remarkable antidepressant effects of Xanax. I'm not saying that Klonopin doesn't relieve my depression (it does, because my depression is mostly centered on my anxiety), but Xanax has even better antidepressant effect. I appreciate your comments.Take care,
Brad

First, I'll just clarify that it's Xanax XR, not SR. ;-)
To answer your questions in order...
1. If you use 0.5mg tid, then 1.5mg once daily should do the trick (or possibly 0.75mg twice daily).
2. There are no highs and lows. It's smooth all the way through. Analogous to the difference between Ritalin and Concerta -- there's just no comparison. The onset isn't quite as fast though, so a trick that I use (and this goes for my Klonopin, Ultram, and Dexedrine as well) is to keep a bottle of water beside my bed, set my alarm for an hour before I want to wake up, take my meds and go right back to sleep for an hour. Then when I wake up everything's synergizing and groovin' and things are juuuust fine. :-) Otherwise, I'm a complete grump for the first hour of any day, lol.
3. People find that the duration varies, though it certainly lasts at least as long as Klonopin, and probably longer. The prescribing info says it generally works for 5-12 hours (if I remember correctly), but neither I nor any of the dozen or so people I know personally who've tried it have found this to be the case; one dose seems to last about 20 (if not 24) hours. Hell, my mom switched to it from the IR version and only has to take one every other day! Because of this extended duration (i.e. you're still drugged even in your sleep), you may want to consider a slightly increased dosage (maybe 2mg).
