Is Celexa really helping?

Posted by janejj on August 22, 2003, at 15:17:52

Hello,

I haven't posted here in a while, I decided to stop taking Celexa cos I felt it wasn't having any effect. Anyway after I did that I started getting bulimic and sad, so decided to go back on.

Anyway I spent a couple of months taking it and life was still pretty crappy, unemployed, finding it hard to make friends in a new place. However recently things have gotten better for me in leaps and bounds and I couldn't be happier! My circumstance have changed completely, so the reason for my depression has dissapeared. However I don't know if this is as a result of me taking the Celexa or just because things have changed!? I don't want to take it if it isn't really helping.

I just don't know, but happy all the same, which makes a nice change.

Janejj

It's hard to say if its the drug or your circumstances that have made you feel better. I mean, depression is 90% environent, in my opinion. I think if you feel happy and ready, you could speak to your doctor and start to wean off slowly. See how you feel. If you don't feel good, reexamine your options then. Good luck!

Hi Janejj, boy, do I hear your dilemma!!!! Big time!!! I want to share something really fast because it leads up to the Celexa:-)
I changed my environment last summer~~1200 miles away to be exact, and it did wonders for my depression, although I continued with my med regimen, but I did go back to work and found no need to take such a high dose of Seroquel to help me sleep (when I was on it at that time), I'm no longer on that med anymore.
Anyway, I came back to my *old* environment and it sent me into an downward spiral. I should really say 'I allowed it to'.
What I am trying to do now, is get rid of some baggage~and that is exactly what it is-dirty, rotten, painful, useless, baggage, that I want to get rid of before I venture out again~where? I'm not to sure yet. I am very close with my family, so it may not be 1200 miles away~but who knows?
As far as the Celexa, that med worked very well for me~I went off of it because of that~I was feeling too good *NOT a good idea obviously*, just a suggestion.......if you are feeling good, I would stay on it for now, see how things go, a low dose can't hurt you, you can reap the benefits now, it will help with the bulimia again, which I hope you are getting therapy for?,even though you are in a good environment, and you won't have to deal with withdrawal now.
These are just *my* thoughts, because that's what I did do when I was in your exact situation.
I really wish you the best, if ya need anything just ask :-)

You probably don't need a hole lot, I found 20mg to be a very nice dose.

It's always both.

I know exactly what you mean, and it's always a combination. Antidepressants seem to help your lows be less low and your general happiness (when you're in a good situation) more of a true feeling. I think most would agree to this. I started an antidepressant shortly after a very rough break-up, and it helped, but only made me dwell on it slightly less. (not several hours per day, or all day). However, after the initial effects kicked in, I wasn't in communication with my ex and things were still hard.

It has so much to do with mood and your life-situation. I've rarely seen a great change in mood without being accompanied by a life situation change. It seems to be the antidepressant since you may have recently started it, and it is, but your response to the change in your situation is usually greatly enhanced by the antidepressant.

Good luck
Charlie

Thankyou all for the replies and advice, it is much appreciated!

I think I may try to lower the dose a little and see what happens. Happiness is a very delicate balance!

Thanks again,
Janejj
