Parnate Insomnia Cures

Posted by Budgie on August 19, 2003, at 0:14:33

No, I'm not offering any, just taking!

I just started this med 1 1/2 weeks ago. At first it made me sedated, then in the past few days, wham! I've got energy for the first time in ages. I'm getting a lot more done now that I only need 5 hours of sleep, but this is a little ridiculous. Does anyone have any easy, natural cures for Parnate insomnia? The last thing I want is another prescription just so I can go to bed. I'm going to try the ol' warm milk thing here in a bit, but any other ideas would be appreciated. I think my fiancee's getting annoyed already...

Thanks

Yeah,
I'm able to takle the world on a few hours sleep, i'm on 150mg Effexor xr and am still trying to sort the sleep problem out. I have tried taking it in the morning and night with the same problem. Will try lunchtime.
I tried the hot chocolat at night but was told by my GP the the chocolate is a stimulant and won't help the situation, think i'll add some rum to it tonight. Let me know if you sort it out.

See ya

Sleep is a big issue for a lot of us on Parnate. I belong to a group that has discussed it endlessly and we have all tried changing dosing schedules, taking various meds for sleep, etc. None of us has a magic answer, but most of us ended up with a prescription sleep aid of one kind or another, with varied results. You might want to address a post to Larry Hoover here and ask about supplements and natural sleep aids. I believe he is very knowlegeable about these things, and a lot of us would be interested in his opinion. Good luck.

My reply is first directed to Mel, then Budgie. First, I'd say that if you're going to get involved with natural sleep aids, such as herbal remedies, be real careful that they're not contraindicated with Parnate.
Now, for Budgie-- I, too have experienced the "night owl" thing with Parnate. If I were you, I wouldn't get too stressed out over getting only five hours of sleep a night. There's a big difference between insomnia and what I call a "reduced need for sleep." For me Parnate does the latter, and I too can feel rested and OK the next morning on 5 hours of sleep. Try not to get hung up on the usual advice that people should get this amount or that amount of sleep (traditionally it was 8 hrs.). Everyone--even those who are not taking meds--is different and Parnate will cut that number down for sure. Feeling much better, having sufficient energy, and getting *good-quality* sleep are what matters most.

Good advice, cubby, thanks :) (nm)

You're not alone! The most common sleep aids to take with Parnate seem to be Trazodone (non-addictive, you need to play with dose to find the right one for you) and Klonopin (can be addicting, but if used properly it's fine). Be careful about using any actual sleep meds like Ambien or Sonata, they are addictive and you will need more and more to get the same effect.

I haven't found any natural sleep aids or sleep remedies strong enough to counter the effects of Parnate. The hard part is getting your sleep regular, so you aren't sleeping 10 hours one night and 5 the next.

Good luck,
Jessica
