Abilify and Cravings for Sweets

Posted by katiemom on August 18, 2003, at 22:05:31

I have been on abilify for 9 months starting at 10mg and now up to 20mg and I've noticed that I have an incredible craving for sweets. It has gotten worse with the increase with the dosage. I saw my pdoc today and he says that the pharm. rep. claims they never have heard of it. I told him I would post this question to see if others have experienced this. If so, then he will contact them and let them know. I am also on 200mg on topomax and thought that would help, but no go.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Colleen

perfect question for me...we are on the same exact meds!!! what your p-doc needs to do is keep a look out for the development of diabetes which is a risk of all atypical neuroleptics, however, abilify is supposed to be the safest so far...i have always craved sweets and it hasn't increased since abilify...i work as a psych nurse and some doctors are really oblivious to the health risks of our meds...watch your lipid panel and watch your blood glucose...carb craving can be a symptom....make him pay attention................leslie rn

Thanks for your input. Maybe I should have some tests done. I am very overweight due to other antipsychotic drugs I've been on. That is why my doctor wanted me to be on this regiume of drugs to help with the weight. I'll ask him to request some tests for me to be on the safe side.
