I was hoping someone might have some information or be able to point me in the right direction on this. I'm just wondering what month/year Desoxyn was actually approved by the FDA?

Hi there, Many uses of amphetamines are *off label*, not illegal, but not approved usage by FDA
This includes ALL drug combos, such as Fen/phen
Amphetamines: Adderall, Dexedrine, Desoxyn, and methampex. So, I am hoping this answered your question. Desoxyn was never approved by the FDA.> I was hoping someone might have some information or be able to point me in the right direction on this. I'm fairly sure it was one of the many drugs that were "grandfathered in" because they were already in common use when the FDA started the "approval" process.
This process required that randomized controlled trials "prove" that a drug worked for it's approved indication.
I think this was sometime in the early 60's, and was done as an effort to eliminate "snake-oil" and "general tonic" type cures.
It was then re-classified from the general category of "approved drug" to "schedule II controlled substance" category in the late 60s, with the Controlled Substances Act.
You can find a facinating narrative of this history in David Healy's book, "The Creation of Psychopharmacology"

Thanks for the info -- I was able to find that methamphetamine itself became Schedule II under the CSA on July 7, 1971. However, I'm still wondering about the brand name drug Desoxyn -- when was *it* put before the FDA and ultimately approved for use in the U.S.?

>As a D'ox user since last fall, let me go into this.
Desoxyn was awarded its patent on December 31, 1943. It was approved for "hyperkinetic disorder" (ADHD) and exogenous obesity. This may have been indicated in the early 60's, or at the time it was approved in 1944 as it entered the market.
It *certainly* is approved for ADHD, as it has been for decades. There is no question that this is perhaps the only FDA indication it has that doctors are comfortable about prescribing it for today.
This bunk about Desoxyn being difficult to receive is nonsense. Doctors who prescribe other amphetamines are prescribing an equally abusable medicine, so no one who is not given Desoxyn is being denied it for abuse potential if they're given a different Schedule II while under the care of a rational doctor.

Thanks for the info!
Also, while I pretty much agree that many doctors who prescribe other Schedule II stims won't have a problem prescribing Desoxyn, there are quite a few who see Desoxyn as more abuseable (presumably due to its generic name) and are thus much more uncomfortable prescribing it than the other amphetamines or methylphenidate. The same sort of thing happens with benzos -- a lot of doctors don't think twice about writing a prescription for Klonopin, though they often have quite an aversion to Xanax, even though they're both Schedule IV drugs. <shrugs>

I asked my pdoc about desoxyn last year sometime. He asked me what it was and when I said methamphetamine, he quickly came up with something else for me to try. Its not listed on my insurance formulary either. For now dexedrine sr seems to be working ok.
