lamictal...paintful bumps..do I need to worry?

Posted by highanxiety on August 13, 2003, at 10:42:11

I have a large raised bump on my face, on my chest, and one on my back. they are not my typical acne..they are painful to touch. Also my chest is very itchy.

I've taken some pics for my dr...should I call?

I've tried to find info on how the "rash" looks but I can't find any pictures..

any input would be appreciated.

According to warnings issued by the drug manufacturer, *any* rash-like symptoms should trigger the following responses:

1. Immediate discontinuation of the drug.
2. Immediate medical care.

So....stop taking the drug, and go see a doctor. Now.

Would you post follow ups on your condition. I am concerned about this whole rash issue. I hope this request does not sound morbid. Please keep us informed. Thanks.

yes, the clinic called back and the dr. said that that was the rash and that i was to stop immediately. These painful bumps had mulitplied esp on my legs and waist. I also was getting a couple of canker sores but im not sure thats related. My understanding is that there may not be one exact way that the rash starts to show, but how the neurologist described it for me is exactly what i had. Mine kind of look like acne, or measles. Little red welts and mine were painful to touch. That is what alarmed me, the pain went way into the skin.

the dr. also said if I wanted i could restart the lamictal after a week or so and that there is a possibility that the rash would not show the second time. I got no explanation as to why it wouldn't show again, but perhaps that is their experience. They said that if it did come back a second time, i was to again call their office. However I have doubts that my psychiatrist will want me to go back on it as when she has prescribed it alone (i mean w/me she is working w/ the neurologist) she has never re-prescribed it after someone developed a rash.

thanks for your concern, hope it was helpful. i am very itchy today!!

When you mentioned pain, with respect to having skin eruptions, I was very concerned. The sores in your mouth are consistent, as well. The problem is, this is taking place inside your body too, where you can't see it.

Have you not been seen by a doctor? It may rarely happen, but if this reaction progresses beyond what you have now, it can kill you. I hope *I'm* not over-reacting, but I fear that you may be under-reacting. There is a definitive blood test to determine the seriousness of your individual situation.

thank you..frankly both drs. told me very little regarding this rash when I started lamictal..i was only worried about the headache(!)..the neuro did mention yesterday that if it "gets worse" to see a dr. - i mean it was a very general statement. I wonder if they see this often and maybe aren't as alarmed as perhaps they should be when their patients call in. The psychiatrist was the same, she never mentioned sending her patients to get checked and she's had a few that got rashes.

I will call my gp after I get off, he knows everything thats going on w/ me medically..and see if I should go in and see him..hes good - he calls and checks on how his patients are doing, so he would be I think a good choice to keep tabs on this. I'll see what he says. and ask about the blood test..I'm not seeing any new bumps...but i dont know what specifically to look out for except more bumps.

I don't know either. All I know is it can get quite serious.....it might not stop at your current state. It's not the sort of thing to be diagnosed over the phone, or the internet, ya know? You need a workup.

My doc told me to immediatley go to the emergency room if I experience any sign of a rash. The rash is a good reason to go there, and in no way an over-reaction. Thats what I would do if I were you.

take care
