Lamictal questions from newbie!

Posted by stefl on August 4, 2003, at 22:01:18

Hi there. Pretty new to this board, but have found much helpful info already! I was only diagnosed as Bipolar within the last year & what a ride it's been! I am a rapid cycler with mixed states & all that fun stuff! I've been on more meds than I can even remember to mention! I have not been on any of the big three yet though, because of the weight gain concern. I am already very overweight & cannot risk a major med gain. So after being in the drug hazes that everything else have caused for the past months, my pdoc has decided to start me on Lamictal tonight. She wants me to start at 25mg, every other night, then work up to every day- as I am extremely sensitive to everything else so far. I will be taking it along with .25mg of Risperdal though- which is just about the only med I found no mention at all of in any Lamictal threads here! Why is that? Is this an odd pairing for some reason? I'd be interested in any opinions out there. Also, I have Provigil to take as needed, as I get dangerously sedated on just about everything! And I also have Ambien waiting in the wings! I used it every night for months, with great success while on all kinds of other stuff. But had to quit it when the Risperdal was upped to .5mg, because I was so ridiculously druggy & lethargic all the time. But I definitely have not slept as well without it. So I'm going to try the Lamictal & Risperdal without anything else & see what happens. Although I must say that all the posts mentioning major manic/hypomanic states on the Lamictal scare me- since just finished that experience coming off Trileptal while on Lexapro! Anyway, sorry to babble! Overtired! Any input appreciated!

I have experienced no mania with Lamictal. But Risperdal definately caused me to gain weight. If it is working OK for you then definitely stick with it. There are probably peopIe out there for whom it caused weight loss. don't think the combination is odd or anything. Lamictal takes a while to build up to a therapeutic dose though. Take it slow and hang in there with it. I like it a lot. I see many people here posting about Lamictal poop-out but I haven't had that problem. I hope you have good experiences with it.

Thanks for your reply! Just wondering how major a weight gain it caused you & how long after you started taking it did you notice the weight ? Thanx for any info you can share! StefL

I noticed within three to five months. After two years I added almost twenty pounds.
