mood stabilizers please help

Posted by Sigolene on July 29, 2003, at 11:35:23

I'm bipolar II and I tried lithium, lamotrigine, which worsened my depression. On Tegretol I had bad skin rash.

I can't tolerate any med acting on 5-HT, that's why I think I reacted badly with lithium and lamotrigine, they act indirectly on 5-HT.

Does anyone knows a mood stabilizer which does NOT act on 5-HT ?
What about Valproic acid? (name: dekapote I believe)

(sorry for my bad english, ma native language is swiss.)

Hi
Neurontin(gabapentin) is sometimes used for bipolar disorder as a mood stabilizer. I don't know if it acts on 5-ht or not.

Definately try the Depakote! This has worked wonders for me and many others that I know. It is very powerful but has few side effects.

Best of Luck to You! =)

Well Depakote can cause a tremendous about of weight gain so I wouldn't say "few side effect". Although I do know people who haven't experience weight gain but they are few.
