Memantadine for severe depression?

Posted by Psychquackery on July 28, 2003, at 21:44:22

I have severe refractory depression and the only thing that really works for me is MAOIs. Needless to say this is a pain as it makes eating out and traveling difficult. I recently read on the NIMH website about a clinical trial for something called memantadine. Its been in the news lately for Alzheimers disease, but at NIMH they are testing it as an antidepressant. In Germany, its already approved for dementia and parkinsons disease.

Has anyone tried this stuff? Maybe someone from overseas? I am curious about this drug because it is said to not only clear up depression but also the pseudu-dementia that oftentimes comes with severe depression.

Hi Igor.

I am also interested in memantine. I will probably try it as soon as it is approved for Alzheimer's Dementia. I'll be curious to see what the NIMH comes up with.

I wish that I would respond adequately to MAOIs. I don't find the restrictions to be anything more than a minor nuisance.

Hi Scott,

Do you know when this drug is going to be FDA approved for Alzheimers dementia? I know it is going to be FDA approved for that, cause I read it. There is a lot of excitement about this drug for that. The question is just when. Do you have any idea when it might be on the drug shelves?

From what I have found on the Web, Merz has decided to call their drug, memantine, Axura. I don't know when it will be approved, but I get the feeling that it will be pretty soon.

Im sorry I made a mistake. The actual name of this drug is called "Memantine" and NOT "memantadine." There is a clinical trial at NIMH right now assessing whether Memantine is useful for major depression.
