Ativan vs. Tranxene

Posted by irishcatholic on July 21, 2003, at 12:31:29

I'm essentially taking meds for anxiety. Found 0.5 Ativan 2x day pretty good, but pdoc suggested last time to try Tranxene 7.5 3x per day. Understand that it has longer half life but doesn't seem to work nearly as well and biases me toward depressed mood. Is this just the normal "Your results may vary" or is there some more profound explanation? I'm pretty sure now that "all benzos are not alike".
BTW I've tried most all the SSRIs and either couldn't hack the side effects or they just didn't work.

I have found that Klonopin works great.

Ativan is lovely and, if necessary, not terrible to wean off of. I thought tranxene was a lot more sedating, it didn't help my mood and I quickly changed meds. I take klonipin because it is stronger. Supposedly it lasts over a day in a person's system but if you ever use it, I'd recommend taking it three times a day. PS: Although it seems most people on this board think it is evil, I thought gabapentin (neurontin)worked great until I developed a mild itching after three months. PPS: All the benzos will be cause withdrawal after about a week in my experience if you keep them in your system all the time but I suppose you know that.

I have taken Ativan before (2 mg 3 times daily) and it didnt even work for me like Tranxene does. I take 15 mgs 3 times daily. I think it works alot better and doesnt wear out on you like the ativan does.

That's interesting, because the dose-equivalence of the Ativan is a lot greater than the Tranzene. I have taken Tranzene for about 4 years now. I have had Ativan before to supplement treatment for periodic anxiety (in addition to the Tranzene). However, I take my Tranzene (22.5mg) all at once about an hour before I go to bed. I take it more as a sleep aid really. I am supposed to take 7.5mg during the day, and 15mg at night, but I have found I need to take it all at night in order to sleep. I was on Ambien before I started seeing my Pdoc in 1997, but the first thing he did was to take me off of the Ambien (I don't know why). My sleep has been deteriorating over the past 6 months, I can sleep maybe 3 hours, then another 3, but after that, I really cannot get back to sleep (I just flip over and look at the clock every few minutes for about and hour or so, then get out of bed). I have an appointment with my Pdoc next week (I only see him once every 4 months, as my meds have been the same for about 4 years) and I think I will ask him about letting me get back on the Ambien. I have always been "afraid" to push on the benzo/sleep aid issue, because I fear that he will take away my Tranzene if he thinks I am getting a tolerance to it. So basically, I have been accepting "good enough" better than the thought of "not at all".
