SSRIs without the tiredness

Posted by matthhhh on July 18, 2003, at 11:34:23

Does anyone know of an SSRI than does not cause tiredness?? I have been on almost all ssri's including prozac, paxil, effexor, celexa.
Has anyone got tired from these medications but benefited from other ssri's (ie. lexapro), without the tiredness?
The side effect of being tired on these drugs seems to outweigh the benefit of taking them. Can't drug companies come up with a solution to a new drug without this side effect??

2 suggestions: EffexorXR, an SNRI, which I found quite activating and have heard similar things about, and Wellbutrin, which is not an SSRI/SNRI and is very activating from all I hear and read. No personal experience with that one, sorry.

For what it's worth, I've never been tired on an SSRI (Paxil, EffexorXR, Celexa) and I take them along with anti-anxiety meds! However, serotonin activation can induce fatigue - read it right on here!

I get tired on SSRI's too. Both Prozac and Celexa made me want to nap during the day. I am on a very low dose of Lexapro now and I don't notice the fatigue as much as the other two. I am taking Lexapro because I feel tired all the time (I guess from depression) and I think it has helped me have more energy.

Good Luck to you.

Is the tiredness side effect of the SSRI or is it due to inadequately treated derpession?

I don't respond to any SSRI. Seems that my serotonin doesn't need topping up. Seems I am low in norepinephrine because things like reboxetine work well for me.

You might be a good candidate for using Strattera. Like reboxetine, it is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Desipramine is another drug that might be of help to you.

I really don't feel very tired. I like to take only a 20 minute nap in afternoon if I can but I wake up refreshed and not that druggy feeling that Prozac and Celexa gave me. I am also okay if I can't have my nap. About 4 hours after taking Lexapro I feel a little less energetic, but not exhausted or anything.

Also on Celexa I lost my motivation to do anything - I got lazy - and on Lexapro I feel more motivated. But I am on only 2.5 mg a day so that is a tiny bit. I am extremely sensitive to any medication so I have to take it easy on dosage.

The tricky think is, however, that people respond so differently to the same medication; Lexapro might be different for you. Maybe you could start with a small dose and see how you feel.

Best of luck and, if you can, let me know how it turns out for you.

Yeah all the SSRI'S made me tired too. I'm on remeron now and it doesn't make me tired during the day at all. I really am liking remeron, but the appetite increased side effect was a total BEAST at first, now I've upped it to 37.5 per night and the hunger things gone, started working out a bit and getting rid of the weight I put on, but I am still a little conerened about it's potention for killing white blood cells...which I think happens more than is being reported. I have been getting a sore throat on and off lately, it doesn't usually last long, but it's annoying. I will be trying this MGN-3 stuff this week, which increases white blood cells and helps protect the immunse system. The price is a little steep, but it sounds like it's worth it. It can help prevent cancers aparantly.

I take 20 mg Lexapro. I used to take it in the morning. I now take it before bed and feel less tired during the day.
