newposter: transitioning off all meds, pls respond

Posted by mollpitch on July 18, 2003, at 13:42:21

To be brief: Have been medicated for depression, exacerbated imo by hormones (post luteal phase dysphoric disorder), for some 16 years. Began with Prozac, then Paxil, then Wellbutrin, d/c'd Paxil, added Celexa, changed Celexa to Lexapro about 7 months ago, dx'd w/ADD and added Adderall. Have been pregnant, perimenopausal, and now menopausal during this time, and I mention this b/c hormones are a factor for me. Started having serious trouble with staying awake all night, which then made it confusing about should I take meds and when. All of this under psychiatrist's care, in addition to therapy w/psychologist. Began frequent skin picking a couple years ago, and had serious compulsive tendencies when on Wellbutrin alone for a period. (Cleaned the microwave and the BBQ with a toothpick!). In the last two weeks, MD has supervised d/c of Adderall (I was on 30mg XR) and then d/c of Wellbutrin (Was on 350mg q AM). I found I was just so so sloggy, furry, fuzzy, groggy, hazy on the Lexapro w/out the other stuff, so I started to cut back from the prescribed 30 mg, to 20, then 10 then 5, now none. I am also closing in, I hope, on some "issues" in my therapy and get to a different place emotionally when the meds are not medicating, I think! So. I'm dizzy, and hazy and having sweats, and can still be awake til 3, 4 am and had eye twitches, and my eyes are very light sensitive. I have head "rushes" where it seems my blood sort of surges in my head. I am a nurse, btw, which I mention for no apparent reason :). My question is about the skin picking - have others experienced this? would it be exacerbated by Wellbutrin? My blepharospasms (eye twitching) - too much serotonin? Insomnia - menopause? meds? As you can see, I'm in a whirl and it's hard to sort things out. Request for response is to hopefully not be swirled away - outside contact helps. My docs are there, but family is not, and hearing from others who have experience helps. Thanks

hey there, if I'm not mistaken, I think there is a psychopharmacologist who frequently makes replies within this forum and he would be very knowledgable about all that. So, maybe he will see your post. good luck

Hi there,
I can relate to the skin picking. I pick until its a huge bleeding sore. And it never heals because I can't seem to leave it alone. I noticed just recently I started to pick my scalp as well. I'm on Effexor XR 450. Sometimes I need to put band aids over it so I can't get at it as easily.
