Toastmasters for Social Anxiety???

Posted by HenryO on July 3, 2003, at 16:47:58

My biological psychiatrist says the best cure ever for social anxiety is Toastmasters. Has anybody heard of this? Has anybody got experience with toastmasters?

my Psychologist (note PSYCHOLOGIST) told me to join toastmasters, this was at the begining of my therapy...and at that point, I couldn't even talk on the phone, and had to have my mother there with me in therapy...needless to say, I saw a psychaitrist.

Im sure if you have the specific social anxiety of public speaking, but I don't even know how toastmasters is possible for someone suffering from generalized social anxiety

i agree with djmmm for the most part, were my sp is not helped by increased exposure and practice in social situations , mine is centered around poor word processing even in none threating situations, extreme pessimism, even around family members who i live with etc...

anyway for some im sure it could help. its kind of like throwing you right into the ball park but with a great deal of safety. these people arent likely to judge you negativily, and they should congradulate you on your progress. and once you feel like you can do that, you could gain a great deal of confidence in other social situations. unless it is torturing, i would give it a shot.

i used to feel anxious around even my friends, but by chance i ended up doing something more anxiety-provoking, and now the everyday anxiety is much reduced and i'm back to being afraid of things that are more normal (speeches, talking to cute girls, etc) ...

but i definately credit meds for a lot of my success

Thought Toastmaster was a kitchen appliance...

Trying to figure out how it could ease social anxiety...I guess you could heat it up & stick your hand in there. THAT would make you forget about social anxiety, damn skip, at least until you got to the ER & the doctor asks you, why did you stick your hand in that hot toaster oven you moron? Or I guess you could invite some people over & get to know them while you stand in a circle around the Toastmaster with marshmallows on sticks, wonder what Martha Stewart would think about THAT. It just doesn't seem like the best idea to me, maybe I'm missing something.
