appetite gone...still eating everything in sight.

Posted by Sabina on June 17, 2003, at 0:12:28

After two weeks on Lexapro augmented by Xanax, my appetite has completely disappeared. That should be good news for me, but the anxiety is not yet being managed effectively and has resulted in nervous eating habits. I'm not talking about binges, mind, but certainly more than I need. Prior to the Lex I had managed to lose nearly 20 of my 30 pound goal. Now I'm sleepy yet anxious, afraid to leave the house, and eating five times a day. Saints preserve me. Any suggestions of any type more than welcome.

You are still *early* in your Lex *experience* so this SE, if you can call it that, may go away. I found that Lex made me crave carbs (CHEX MIX!!!) at first and I did do some binges even though I was not hungry (nervous eating). Been on 10mg and into month 5. I have lost 10lbs. and have not gained them back. I eat smaller portions now than I used to, and feel full. The carb cravings are gone, and no more binges.

It may take 6-8 weeks before you notice any benefits, I was into week 9 before I realized that the Lex was WORKING!!

Best of luck and keep us posted on your progress!~~~8|8

i am in week 4 of lexapro and noticed right away the decrease in my appetite. i have lost 10 pounds. slowly my appetite is coming back and i'm starting to feel better, even sleeping better. i took the advise of mariposa and tim (thank you!) and stuck with it. when i was prescribed this drug i was told of no SE's - if i hadn't read this message board i would have thought i was going crazy. the first couple of weeks are hard, but stick with it. good luck! kinsey

I'm glad I was able to help!!! And it's great you feel you are progressing, the worst of it should be over (however I did experience anxiety and increased depression weeks 4-5, hope you DON'T).

Isn't it just awful that all these physicians are giving us stuff and then not warning us about what could happen! Like yourself, I was told NOTHING about SE's, and if I had not done my own research and found this site, I would have quit by end of week 2, which would have been a shame because I feel Lex has helped me a LOT!

Best of LUCK and keep us posted on how you are doing.~~~8|8

My appetite died completely for the first 4 days on 5mg. It's now come back and today I've upped my dose to 10mg. I couldnt go with 10mg straight away as it made me way to edgy.

Looking back on it, would you say that there was a subtle improvement before 9 weeks?

I'm on the same routine you are on. I take 20mg of lex and four .5 doses of Xanax a day. I started the last week in April. My anxiety caused me Nausea. Once my nausea went away my appetite has slowly been coming back. I still do not eat as much as I use to. I got concerned enough, so I sated drinking Ensure or Boost once a day to help me with the calories. Hang in there> If you are like me you will wake up one morning and feel different. The small problem I have now is that I wake up nervous, but my mind works now and can logically get through it, but I still don't like mornings. Try to stick with it and if your going eat snack on the fruits or veggies if you can. Like you said your eating beacause your nervous not because your hungry. I sure hope my babbling on helps you. Take care of yourself. Tim

Yes, in retrospect I was doing better by week 6-7, I just did not realize it at the time. In going back and reading my posts from that time, I was getting over SE's and expecting something *big* to happen. It was gradual, I could tell I was improving, I think I was expecting too much. And then one day I caught myself really laughing at something on TV and I felt GOOD, and I knew then, for sure, that Lex was working.

Hang in there!!!~~~8|8
