Jehovah's Witnesses sue Health Canada

Posted by Squiggles on June 15, 2003, at 19:35:18

I just read a post on usenet where
"True Hope" is suing Health Canada over
the issue of using nutritional supplements
to treat bipolar disorder. I looked up
"True Hope" (correct me if i'm wrong) and
they are Jehovah's Witnesses.

I'll be looking for more on this story;
let me know if you have heard anything;

What's the issue that they have with it? That people shouldn't be using nutritional supplements, or they should be??

It appears to be a direct reaction to the health claims being made by the Truehope corporation. By claiming that the nutritional package is a treatment for specific (mental) disorders, they violate laws limiting health claims to drugs which have passed through rigorous clinical trials. There have been no clinical trials of EMPower+. Published references in the literature are all open-label case-reports, the scientific equivalent to anecdote.

The exact issues are not really clear. Truehope has published a rebuttal on their website which makes numerous references to boron, but I can't find anything in the Health Canada publications which refers to that substance.

By the way, I don't know where Squiggles got the link she made to JW. I've seen no religious link in anything I've read, and I'd consider it irrelevant if I did find one.

The Jehovah's witnesses believe that they should be able to advertise the product as a treatment for a whole host of mental illnesses.

Many (not all) are of the school that if its not a natural product then it should not be used.

The product needs to be tested like all other products out there. If claims can be made then people are likely to try it in place of their traditional medications.

I'm all for natural remedies but if they win, (which they won't) then every other marketer of herbal products will be able to make wild claims for their products as well.

True Hope is a marketing company in Canada that sells EMPower as a nutritional supplement, claiming it cures mental illness. The government is making them stop saying it, thus the lawsuit. True Hope has no connection with Jehovah's Witnesses, unless someone who works for them happens to be one. The article i read refers to a book about EMPower called "Pig Pills". Did i read something about that in a previous thread?
