Anxiety/Moods/ and Alcohol

Posted by Saltmarsh Rose on June 12, 2003, at 20:53:54

Hi,

i've been on Neurontin for about 9 months now
and it seemed to stave off my anxiety at about
400mg/day. i'm BP2 and also take Li (450mg - 16yrs)
, Lamictal (125mg - 6+yrs) and
now since my landing in the hospital, trazodone (25mg - night).

Now i'm worrying again, and have been ordered
(by my pdoc and just about everyone and their mother) not to drink alcohol.
i think i would just get myself
a little toasted on wine every night, so its hard
to deal with the worry and anxiety again day and night.

Anyone else have any experiences with weaning off
a very soft-core wine habit? i have been walking at night
to keep busy and relax, but realize that there has been
some emotional attachment to the smooth and oakey,
yet bright and citrusey top-noted contents in the glass.

Peace,
Rose

saltmarsh rose...interesting, like the flower?
anyway, I believe that, just by the fact that you are asking HOW to wean off alcohol, you may benefit from something like AA or even something more informal like the counseling provided by therapists who cater to DUI prevention (a more informal group therapy,--not AA) Sometimes hearing others experiences is all you need... just a thought...

You may have been asking only for a drug alternative or suggestion, but...

Prior to beginning medication, I also had a habit of taking a few drinks in the evening to stave off lingering anxiety and to help me sleep. Let me stress that for me it was (luckily) only a *habit* and not an addiction, but here's how I got away from the urge: Substitution is key, as is redirection. Walking in the evening is a great start. I also take the money I would have spent on wine during a week and buy a little treat to reward myself for making a healthier choice. I also invested in a juicer, for creating exotic blends and super healthy smoothies. I've also got quite a collection of herbal and regular teas. I still have the pleasure of shopping, joy of preparation...a ritual, really, and the enjoyment of a tasty beverage. I try not to beat myself up too much when I do succumb to temptation, but these tricks have really helped me.
