Periactin /cyproheptadine Question

Posted by 2sense on June 10, 2003, at 13:59:39

Hi all --

I've been on Effexor XR for 10+ days, last 2 on 75 mgs. ... not doing much yet except side effects. My doc gave me Periactin (generic: cyproheptadine ) to counter the anorgasmia(?sp?). Directions: 4 mg pills, 1-4 pills about an
hour before.

Question(s): Has anyone ever used it, was it successful? I'd be interested especially in women, but any and all input is appreciated.

Also does it increase your appetite and hence you gain weight? I have read about this in past years on this board, and other web sites, etc.

Thank you all ... I have a different med question but will post separately so not to 'dilute' :-) your kind input.

Thanks * so * much,

2sense

Yes periactin will definately increase your appetite. Also it may make you drowsy. I've taken it off and on for weight gain and the hunger was boundless. as for other problems--i cannot say but good luck!

We can get Periactin OTC, without a prescription here in Canada. I can buy as much as I want, and have. Of course I used it following it's normal precribing route, but found it reduced the anxiety and such of SRI/SNRI's. It doesn't seem to do much for sexual problems for me. I'd suggest *all* folks with anxiety/aggitation problems with SRI/SNRI's use Periactin regularly.

One of my next considerations is consistent daily use of Viagra. My doc has had amazing experiences with this, and has read research it also benefits people in depression through the positive, wonderful feelings of a healthy sex drive. (I'd agree, as that could also lead to more desire to socialize, and go through a positive upward spiral.) The only problem is the price of Viagra.

I'd say do some further research, and talk to your doc about it. Best wishes...

Jay

Yes, it will increase your apetite, if used on a regular basis.

Personally, I used it (2 mg) a night because it makes you sleep like a charm, and the sexual desire came back the next day.

I personally don't really recomend the stuff though because it made me depressed again.

Give it a try, just watch out for depression, increased apetite, etc.
