I am new to effexor xr and so far I haven't seen any dramatic results I have only been taking it for about one week now should I be feeling anything yet? I'm afraid it's not going to work at all. Even the side effects are getting less noticable but I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing, I have that old mentality no pain no gain or the worse it tastes the better it will make you! The one thing I have noticed is that it has calmed my irritability because I have been taking it in the morning but it makes me so sleepy that I have decided to start taking it before I go to bed, so yesturday I did not take one all day until I went to sleep and I was really irritated up until about an hour after I took it I calmed back down. A bit of a change of subject, I have been reading all of the posts and threads and the one thing I have noticed is that there is so much negative feed back from all these meds and the side effects are scary from a lot of them, I just don't get it if these medicines are meant to make you feel better why in the hell would anyone take them if all that happens is the side effects make either another issue which you have to take more meds for or they make you feel worse than before you got on them in the first place???!!!! I guess I understand in a way because just like me everyone is out there searching for that one medicine that is finally going to end what ever problems we have within ourselves. As humans we are all searching for the one thing even "normal" people search for and that's happiness. That's assuming that anyone is really normal.

NO, AD's do not kick in for 4-8 weeks.
Often the AD effect starts building after 4 weeks, so take heart that you may not have to wait
8 weeks.

There is a lot said in that post.
Firstly they do take a while to work.
You would think about changing the
medication if the side effects are increasing
or unbearable, or if the depression
is increasing or unbearable. If not give it a while. Effexor can lead
to a higer rate of sustained remission
compared to SSRI's but it can take a little
longer to work.People tend to complain about the side effects
because it is a really effective drug. Often
people feel back to normal, and are asking themselves.. "why was it again that I am
tolerating these side effects???"Anyhow, keep a journal and hang in there.
By the end of two-three weeks you should have
a clearer understanding of what paths to take. And beleive me, there are *plenty* of non-antidepressant users, who are very satisfied
with there life and don't want to change anything. As you get better you will be more concerned about how to keep well, than how to feel better.
The idea that everybody out there is feeling crappy, is simply not true. People's problems are highlighted in the news, songs, and television, but these are often not acurate representations of the average mood.

I agree withe everything everyone else said, the key here is PATIENCE. I know it is hard but you really have to wait at least SIX weeks and probably eight--I have never felt a lot better until eight weeks into a med but that is my experience and you may be different but I remain unconvinced that you can feel true, even slight, AD effects from any SSRI, or SSRI type meds, in less than two or three weeks--that is for unipolar depressives, I don't know about you bipolars and bipolar II's.

> JACKI guees you misunderstood because I am not complaing about the Effexor I am really pleased that I don't have all the ugly side effects that I have been hearing about in different posts I just don't understand how they can stay on the meds. The other thing is that I am not bipolar 1 or 2 I have GAD and I am depressed a lot of the time or rather irritated by everything just about all of the time. Then I get irritated from being irritated all the time. Funny huh?:) Anyways, I feel like Effexor has been starting to work and I am really happy about that. You siad that the ad's usually take up too at least four to six weeks to actually feel the effects of it so I was wondering, how does it feel when it starts working? What changes should I look for? the other question I had is what is unipolar?
