My 5 yr old has tardive dyskinesia from the 17 months she was taking Respirdal. These doctors don't even know the true side effects from this drug even though they are prescribing it to a 3 yr old at the time. She was on 3mg by the 15 month mark on this drug. We did not really notice any thing until she was taken off the respirdal. They put her on prozac for what they called Obsessive compulsive disorder and told us to wean her off of respirdal. The only side effect we were ever told about from the respirdal was the appetite increase and weight gain. That was it. We were shocked when we learned that she had Tardive Dyskinesia. Has anyone had any success with high doses of vitamin E. Has anyone ever tried Lethacin for TD? I would really like to hear from anyone who has tried these two remedies or if you have found something else that works. The doctors did offer me one option. They told us that we could put her back on the drug that damaged her brain in the first place. You see alot of these drugs mask what it is doing to your brain until you come off the offending agent. This is not an option for us and we would really like to help her so she can enjoy being a kid again. She deserves some sort of qualitiy of life. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. What symtoms emerged in her? I am sorry that happened. Have they give you reason to believe it may fade over time?
How does one tell the difference between a tic and a TD symptom? Many thanks.

You have a very good chance that she will recover from her symptoms, that is if no other agents cause the symptoms to progress.
Young brains are loaded with Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) This is what lets children recover so well from brain surgery, and how they can learn new languages so well.
Given time, and lots of physical stimulation (excercise, and other tactile input), there is a good chance that the brain will remap itself.
As far as drugs go, do the absolute best to keep dosages low, consider alternatives like Omega 3 (fish oil - helps ocd and ADD - kids brains suck this up like pixy sticks) and most of all,
give her lots of love.Best of Luck

Thanks for the words of encouragment. How you tell a tic from a TD is TD is not just facial tics. There are different forms of TD or should I say sisters of TD. There is akathisia which is inner restlesness, and restless arms and legs, and there is also Tardive Dystonia which is abnormal trunk movements. Andrea has all three. She has improved slightly since the beginning(taking her off respirdal)and prozac. She is currently on high doses of vitamin E, she is on a concentrated dose of lecethin and yes she is taking Omega. Not just omega 3 actually. She is taking a combined 3-6-9 omega oil capsule once daily. I have also started taking the omega vitamin as it is very good for your heart as well! We are very early on in our quest with vitamins and I will keep you posted as to how she responds. We are seeking out the services of a Ortho-molecular doctor at the present time. He has contacted us and is willing to help. I will keep you posted. I appreciate any feedback personal or professional that I receive. Tardive Dyskinesia is a well kept secret by the psychiatric community and it can and does have devistating effects on your overall quality of life. It is time that TD is brought to the forefront for all patients young and old can make an informed decision on whether to try a medication or not. Benefits vs. Risks. Take Care Mama Bear aka Tammy

>>>>>>Tics aren't only limited to the face....Tammy, find the book by Gary Null titled The Food-Mood Body Connection---book stores like Border's should have it---it has a chapter devoted to just what you're looking for, help for TD....hope that helps you!

To my knowlege that is an extremely high dose for such a young person.
We did not really notice any thing until she was taken off the respirdal.
I've heard of this happening- ie TD after therapy.
They put her on prozac for what they called Obsessive compulsive disorder and told us to wean her off of respirdal. The only side effect we were ever told about from the respirdal was the appetite increase and weight gain. That was it.If that is the case, take the Dr.'s in question to authorities. Extremely unethical practice (oh, hang on...it's shrinks we are talking about - most of them only know how to behave in an appaling way!) How dare they not warn you about your own daughters safety. Again and again I hear of this behaviour from them. I would reccomend seeing a GP (a normal MD) OR you might be lucky and find one of the 5% of shrinks who truly are warm and caring people. I met two after seeing/meeting/knowing about 20-25! The rest were crackers or just bad people.
The doctors did offer me one option. They told us that we could put her back on the drug that damaged her brain in the first place.
Typical! Tell the Dr. who said that to start taking Risperidone him/herself. That is an absolutely ridiculous suggestion.

It saddens me just to hear about this. Also it angers me.

Tammy, I have these suggestions...I myself was on risperidal for derealization for a short time years ago. I was 18 at the time. 2mg gave me akathisa (An EPS).
1. Benadryl - try this.
2. Continue Vitamin E high dose therapy.
3. Look up "Virtual Hospital - Tardive Dyskinesia" on search engine, for an EXCELLANT article on TD - also includes great strategies to help it.
4. Stay away from any antipsychotic treatment (you probably know this anyway) She is only OCD right? BTW, I wouldn't suggest Anafranil for her, if this comes up. Also risk (VERY slight) for TD.
I really hope it works out for you and your daughter. She does not deserve this.God Bless you...you will find a way.
Ace.

I think I can help you get answers from your doctors if you can answer a few questions.
Where are you located?
What state if you are in the United States?
Why did they prescribe Respirdal?
Is she schizophrenic or otherwise show signs of psychosis?
Was the prescribing doctor a psychiatrist or a neurologist?
This story raises so many red flags I can't even begin to tell you. Email me personally if you would like to answer the questions privately. jsmith121@yahoo.com
A three year old should not be on an atypical antipsychotic unless there is a damn good reason for it.JACK
This is the end of the thread.
