Alternate delivery systems for meds? Ideas?

Posted by Barbara Cat on May 19, 2003, at 13:31:03

Does anyone know of any research being done on a better meds transport system other than injection or orally (and anally - let's not even go there). I'm becoming convinced that many of us have compromised digestive systems, overworked livers, Cytocrome P-450 issues, etc, and drugs are not surviving transit and absorption as well as expected. This goes for vitamins and other nutrients as well, lack of which could contribute to our mood disorders. There are transdermal patches to supplement sex hormone decline, and nicotine withdrawal, but I haven't heard of other useful transdermal applications.

I've had a recent eye-opening experience about this subject. I was using a transdermal estrogen patch and taking progesterone orally. I developed a case of endometrial hyperplasia, or thickening of the wall of the uterus - a precancerous condition. This is caused by 'un-opposed estrogen' due to an overabundance of estrogen and not enough progesterone. In other words, the estrogen was being optimally absorbed thanks to the transdermal patch delivery, but the oral progesterone was barely detected.

I've been thinking of researching and doing some experimentation (vitamins and other benign things) using DMSO. Any ideas out there? - BarbaraCat

Hi Barb!
Primal Defense is a probiotic product that will increase absorption....costly too....I would think that digestive enzymes could do the trick....even, perhaps, betaine anhydrous....also, healing a "leaky gut" would as well.....I'd ask Larry Hoover though Barb....he really knows his stuff...but those are some good ideas for starters,lol,....take care Barb!

I had that same idea and just started a good enzyme and probiotic program. I'll look up Primal Defence - anything to help with assimilation. I think alot is due to stressed out liver and I'm working on healing it. Who is Larry Hoover?
