Sudafed - any risks?

Posted by Snoozy on May 18, 2003, at 21:02:20

Hi-
I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of whether there would be any negative consequences of taking Sudafed daily for 4-6 weeks? For doses within the maximum in the directions, and no MAOI in the picture?

Thanks for any help with this.

I took high doses of pseudoephedrine (like 120 mg/day) for about two weeks for a bad ear infection, and I had:

-muscle tension after about a week; noticeable but tolerable
-difficulty orgasming/reduced orgasms!
-feelings of cracked-out ness/spaciness

Otherwise, I didn't notice much in terms of bad effects.

Certainly daily sudafed use is better for you than daily adderall or dexedrine use.

Certainly? Dunno about that, but I agree that said sudafed use is unlikely to be very harmful.

Sudafed - Dirty Secret

I'm kinda glad to hear someone else mention Sudafed. It's been my dirty little secret for years. I initally used it for the sinus stuff. I felt better taking it. It brighten my mood and gave me energy. I have used it almost daily for a while. Small amounts: 15 - 45 mg per day. I have to watch it due to more than that increasing anxiety. I have no real s/e: Heart rate, B/P, etc seem to do fine. Works good for me. I'm probably "hooked", but I felt it couldn't be any worse than the RX items used for "alertness". Lots cheaper, too.

Thanks for sharing this info. May I ask how long you've been taking it daily?

I'm in a desperate situation, as I've been struggling with excessive sleepiness for months (13-15 hours a day). And now I have a major undertaking that I have to be involved in until the end of June, and if I can't have some alertness I'm up the creek without a paddle. I have some problems using caffeine, and I just thought of trying Sudafed. This is my second or third day, and it does help. My breathing is better to boot!

I have been taking Sudafed for months. It is a much cheaper allergy medicine, helps headaches and gives me some energy. While taking Lexapro i needed it to stay awake in the daytime. I took a sustained release of 60 mg/day. Now without lexapro I just take 30 mg if I wake up with a headache. Lots of allergy medications have sudafed in them and people take allergy medications every day.

I probably have been using it for several years - just about daily, actually. I do like it for the sinus stuff and I starting taking it after I decafed myself several years ago. Like I said before, S/E profile great for me. The most I've used per day is maybe 60 mgs. Now 15-30 per day. I honestly think it's really unrated and I can find nothing to contraindicate in lieu of a drug interaction (MAOI's) or doggy heart/circulatory problems. Good Luck, I know how it is to have the "half awake" syndrome.

Any of you who are taking sudafed every day, please go have a liver blood test done.

About ten years ago, I had severe liver damage. It was blamed on the sudafed that I had been taking daily, for chronic sinusitis.

I appreciate that info. My last chem profile was great, to include a liver "look" - SGOT and SGPT, etc - BUN and Creat fine, also. At about 30 mgs per day or so, I'm not too worried. I don't use a combo with Tylenol or the like, don't drink, only use one RX med. I think there are more liver toxic meds that I could be using.
Sorry you had the problem you had.
