Which meds are best for those of us not wanting to gain weight?? I'm currently on 5mg yprexa (and though I know it makes me gain weight, I won't come off this) and am process fo withdrawing from Mirtazapine. I've gained 10lbs in 2 months on mirtazapine, with no uplift in mood (on 45mg) and simply can't put up with this.. gaining weight is justs eriously adding to my depression.
My GP suggested trying Prozac.. I see my psychiatrist next week, so will discuss this all with him then. I had sworn off SSRI's, though Effexor did help me while I was on it, coming off was the worst experience of my life.
Is Prozac good for this?? GP said it has an appetite supressing effect, which would be fab.
I just *really* need to lsoe wieght, but I need to lighten this awful depression too..
Aaaaaaahhhhhhh

this has been a big concern for me as well and I have done a lot of research on the matter.
____SSRI's_____
I'm not sure why your dr is recommending Prozac if weight gain is a big concern for you. Prozac causes weight-gain in a lot of people, possibly more so than other SSRI's. SSRI's in general have been known to cause weight gain. The only SSRI that I know of that claims not to cause weight gain (though some may argue with this claim) is Lexapro.___Other meds____
There are antidepresant alternatives to the SSRIs that work at least as well, but do not cause weight gain (and often actually cause weight loss). The first of these is Wellbutrin, which I have been on and lost some weight on. The second is Parnate, an MAOI that many claim to have lost weight on.Hope this helps

Definitely not TCA's! You might want to look at the DRUGS CHART and see what drugs are used for what conditions, for example, I am on Elavil, which is also used to treat anorexics, which might be the reason why Im gaining so much weight, they must trigger something in the brain to make me want to eat so much, as Im constantly hungry and binge eat.

You already mentioned Effexor, but it is the drug that caused me to lose the most weight (made me underweight really). Wellbutrin was probably the next best for this. But neither one of those drugs worked successfully for my depression/anxiety so the "skinny me" was a big "so what?!" I've had a fantastic remission from my depression with Mirtazapine and have gained 20 lbs, and you know what I say about the weight?-- "so what?!"
I hope you find what makes you happy and healthy.
