rTMS and Seizures

Posted by denise528 on April 26, 2003, at 15:17:52

Hi,

I managed to find a place in London who were doing trials on rTMS, they said I would be a candidate until I told them about a seizure I once had after taking 300mg prothiaden, 10mg Zyprexa and 200 Zooloft. I've never had a seizure ever before or since so I know I'm not prone to them.

I've found somebody else who actually gives this treatment privately, so I'm thinking of going to him. The thing is if he asks me if I've ever had a seizure and I tell him the truth he may not agree to give me the treatment. Should I lie?

Well in a sence it was not a true 'seizure'

make your definition of a seizure
'unvolentary convulsions while not under the
influence of psychoactive substances'

In the end it is for your own safety,
perhaps research why they even have
this restriction, then make your
decision. If this is a procedure
that can help your health then there
is no harm done by a little fib.

Goo Luck :)

Hi Linkadge,

I think it's because apparently TMS has been known to cause seizures in a small percentage of cases.

You said what I wanted to hear but I think the next person I speak to about having it, I'll try and gauge what their position is first if I think they'll say no outright then I just won't tell them otherwise I'll discuss it with them. I don't really want to put myself at risk of having a seizure although it would be such a shame to miss out on something that might help I'm also going to do some more investigation by ringing up some experts. Pfingsteg mentioned a Dr Hutto so I'll try writing to him to see what he says (that's if I get a response)

Thanks for the advice, I just wanted someone to bounce it off.

Hi Denise.. I'm going to answer this one, too... In a clincal trial, they have to exclude everyone with a history of seizures, because that's the way the protocols are written, but doctors using it in private practice can use their own discretion in making treatment decisions. Perhaps the doctor in private practice there is the one to consult. I would be completely honest about the one seizure in your history, so that they can be alert to giving you the protection you need if you do have one while being treated. If they are doubtful, you could suggest that the doctor FAX Dr. Hutto- he's so cool and relaxed about seizures! I think I put the FAX number for him in a post to SLS somewhere near here. FAX is the best way to reach him.

Good luck- and be sure to let us know what happens.

Hi Pfinstegg,

Thanks, I think that's very good sound advice, you're right at least if I'm honest they'll make sure they have the right equipment set up incase I do have a seizure.

I've already tried to contact Dr Hutto, whose name I got from another of your threads but he was with a customer, left a message for him to ring me back but I doubt that he'll ring some uknown person in the UK back so I'll send him an e-mail back.

I must admit the fact that you're not sure whether or not you got a placebo effect from the treatment or a real response makes me wonder about the treatment. I know that when ADs once worked for me it was like stepping into another world, it was like a heightened sense of awareness, visually the world looked a better place, my sense of smell became more acute, music sounded amplified and became more moving, there was no way I could mistake it for placebo. I was so much more relaxed, energetic and motivated. I will always strive to feel like that again.

Thanks for all of the information, hope you continue to feel well.
