Pfinstegg - ECT vs TMS

Posted by SLS on April 25, 2003, at 7:50:13

Hi Pfinstegg.

I know you have had success with TMS. I'm curious if you ever had ECT and how you reacted to it. I had a course of 15 treatments without success. If one is resistant to ECT, does that prognosticate a poor response to TMS?

Thanks.

Hi Scott.. no, I have never had ECT, but I am impressed with how successful the TMS has been- the results are holding up well after 4 months.

I have no idea whether TMS would be recommended after ECT; it is different, in that the left frontal orbito-lateral area of the cortex is strongly targetted, and, although there is spread of the electromagnetic current into the hippocampus, amygdala and basal ganglia, it is a much more limited spread than what happens with the electric current in ECT.

You could telephone Dr Mark Hutto in Atlanta, or FAX him (probably better) and ask. He has given ECT for 20 years and TMS for 2, and can probably give you a good answer.
