Question- Tricyclics... emotional blunting?

Posted by Caleb462 on April 25, 2003, at 0:51:05

I've never taken a tricyclic, it has always been SSRIs. So, my question is.... do tricylics cause the emotional blunting that SSRIs do? The apathy and lack of concern, etc.? I would assume that they do, since that "side-effect" is not really a side effect, but the theraputic effect itself.

The reason I ask is because I've always wanted to try Anafranil, but never have. I'm thinking about asking my doc to put me on Anafranil and compliment it with Provigil to minimize sedation and increase concentration/motivation.

I'm OCD/SP/GAD/ADD and am currently suffering moderate to severe depression.

Thanks.

Not in my experience (nm)

Strange I was thinking about this last night, and I concluded that TCA's do cause me to have blunted emotions, I mean I havnt cried for month now, even when Ive wanted to I cant! And Ive been really flat, people think Im being moody as I dont get pleased about anything. I also have a very short temper before things get on my nerves, I never used to be like that!

No, i've never been on a TCA.
i believe Amitriptyline may be one of the more anticholinergic of the TCAs-- maybe this is contributing to its emotional blunting effects (?). i'm not sure.
