I couldn't take Nardil

Posted by denise528 on April 24, 2003, at 8:01:06

Hi,

Well I tried Nardil for three weeks and just couldn't take it. I felt in a constant fog, I was doing things without actually being aware I was doing them. It was really strange, my memory also seemed screwed up has anyone else experienced this. Also, I keep thinking of having ECT but if I couldn't take Nardil, could I take something like ECT?

denise you did not give nardil a full trial period. it took 5 weeks before it worked for me and the fog thing, all that went away...
go back on it and tritrate slowly.

djmmm--what do you think??

It also seems like you went up to quickly. You started at 45, for two weeks, and then jumped to 90, the max dose that most people do not need. I think it was inevitable that you got those side effects by jumping SO quickly. I think djmmm should advise you, I do not think you gave the med a fair trial.

While ECT has one big side effect (memory loss), it has few less than meds. ECT saved my sister's life-total miraculous recovery from catatonic state w/ parkinson's-like symptoms as a result of haldol. She called me on the phone after just one treatment. Everyone's mileage varies however

I had the same experience on Nardil and stopped after 4wks because i couldnt stand feeling that way. I was on a rather low dose, 40 mg. I switched to Parnate and it is working really well for me. Its a judgment call for you, of course, just adding my experience for your consideration.

Hi Denise,

This sounds bad but do you reckon you could grit it out a bit more? The reason I ask is I remember suffering terrible cognitive problems starting Nardil - I was all over the place. I asked my doc if I could reduce the dose - he said stick with the higher dose for one more week in spite of the prob. Well I did, and from then I became the Nardil champion, professing my love for the medicine world-wide!
Now I'm going off it!!!!

Seriously but, give it another week or so.

Take Care, Nardil is really a brilliant anti-depressant.

Ace.

Denise, I can relate to the fog. I have been on Nardil for about five years. Starting Nardil can be quite a challenge. The diet, the side effects. It is hard to get to the 6 week point because of all these things. At the six week point the effect of this miraculous drug will far outweigh the side effects. If the memory problems persist ask your pdoc to prescribe a stimulant. This may take care of the problem. There are 3 which are being carefully used that I know of. Dexedrine, Ritalin and Cyclert.
Good luck. Lawrence S.
