My daughter is on Abilify but experiences aggression, agitation and irritability at times. Her psdoc is thinking of adding depakote along with the abilify to eliminate these side effects she is having.
Wondering if anyone has tried the depakote for effects of aggression, agitation and irritability along with the main med they are using for mental illness. If not what ones did your psdoc prescribe that worked for you?

Depakote didn't work too well for me as far as the irritability and aggression, but Trileptal worked just great for that. I never had a single side effect with Trileptal, either. The only reason I no longer take it is because I grew out of acting that way.

If not what ones did your psdoc prescribe that worked for you?Hi, I've found that Depakote has worked better than any med I have tried for irritability/explosive temper (specifically). It ain't too hot in other departments that I find very important however (such as depression, ADD, sleep). That makes it a "keeper" for me, but I have to take other meds. Watch out on the dosage though. It can trigger weight gain, metabolic slowing, and can aggravate depression. There is a risk of liver toxicity that is higher in young children than older adults. That is strange that the Abilify on its own doesn't control the symptoms you mention by itself (given that it is an antipsychotic). Does your daughter's psychiatrist suspect bipolar disorder?

Both Depakote and Tegrital (of which Trileptal is related as well) were the first meds to have very noticeable effect in reducing my irritability and anger even at low doses...I would highly recommend either of them. Note that there are anti-psychotics some Dr's will prescribe for irritability and anxiety (e.g., rispidone or mellaril) which I do NOT recommend because they can turn a person into a zombie and cause lots and lots of weight gain.
