Poll: Effexor - When do YOU take it?

Posted by Hollygirl on March 29, 2003, at 21:15:40

Hey y'all. My doc just switched me to Effexor from Lexapro. She didn't give me a specific time to take it, but told me to "mess around with it" to find out what works for me. Inspires a lot of confidence, doesn't it? Anyway, I wanted to take a poll to find out when all you effexor pros take your meds? Right now I am at 11:30 am, but still "messing with it"
Thanks,
Holly

Holly...
I know this may sound a bit strange, but it sounds like your doc knows that you are not a baby. I felt the same way sometimes when mine would say something like that until I just told him the way I felt.

His answer was soothing in a way: "you know your body better than I do and this (effexor) simulates some and sedates others. Just remember to put something in your stomach."

You are like 12 hrs time differece from me. Are you in Autralia or New Zealand????

Holly

I've been on it for several years now with success. When I started it I had to take the dosage twice a day despite it being "once a day" med. Slowly over time I was able to move the dosages closer together. Now I take it first thing in the morning when I wake up.

BEST WISHES

Is it regular or XR?

I take Effexor XR in the morning.

Tony-
Thank you for giving me a different way to look at my doc's comments. That totally makes sense. But I really do feel like a baby at times and I just want my doc to tell me exactly what to do and assure me that it will work. Wouldn't it be nice if things were really that simple! I am not sure what you mean by the time difference...I am in Texas.

It is XR. Have you ever tried taking it at night? What side effects did you experience when your first started taking it? I have been throwing up and very nauseated. Ugh...not too fun

I took the instant release tablets (not the XR capsules), and I had to take them between 12 and 2 pm -- if I took them any earlier, I would be tired all day, if I took them any later, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. If I took them on time I felt great and had energy all day. It was strange, but the timing worked...I agree that it's important to mess around with it abit.

good luck!

Holly, maybe the nausea would be helped by taking the effexor with some food or milk? Also, it always helps me when starting a medication to start on a very small dose and only increase gradually. I don't know if that is a factor for you.

I haven't taken it at night because it is so activating for me anyway.

Fairy--when I took regular Effexor, I took it twice a day, I think, and it HAD to be very regular. I would start to feel awful if I was late for the dose.

I take my Effexor XR (150mgs) mid-morning with food. Sometimes if I've gotten busy and forgotten, it waits until mid-afternoon with no ill effects. It tends to increase my energy level so I've never tried taking it before bed.
I have read posts from those who get sleepy from Effexor. Experimenting to find what works for you is probably good advice.
You may find the nausea subsiding soon.

Best of luck to you!

Thank you for your post. Mid morning seems to be working best for me too. And the nausea is gone :) But I tend to go from periods of energy to moments of pure exhaustion. Very odd.

Right now I'm taking mine before bed, but I'm exhausted during the day now that I've went up to 75mg. (I'm on Effexor XR). I've tried mid day, and that didn't work for me. I'm going to experiment with mornings tomorrow. I also have periods where I'm energetic, and then in an hour, I feel exhausted. I'm just thanking god the sickness and burping have stopped!! :-)
Good luck to you! Jessi
