PMDD--hope this helps someone

Posted by Beastress on March 22, 2003, at 17:27:15

At the risk of being too hopeful too early, here's a highly unscientific observation. I started taking 5mg of NADH and a calcium/magnesium/zinc supplement about 3 weeks ago to try to help some muscle knots and aches. It has helped with that, but remarkably, as a long-time and (somewhat notorious) sufferer of PMDD this is the calmest, sanest, most reasonable period I've had in years.

Will you elaborate more on the muscle helping you found with the Ca Mg and Zinc ??? I have a problem with tension and muscle aches of neck and shoulders. Had tests, tried meds and other interventions, nothing seems to much help continuous. It is on again off again. VERY annoying !!! Have PMS stuff too. I use Remifemin with what seems to be good results. I would appreciate info and what dosages on the minerals you use. Thanks !!!!

Hi S.,
I take as much of the cal/mag/zinc as I can talerate w/o diarrhea. I take the Spring Valley brand (super cheap) but there may be a better one out there. Each tab contains 333 mg calcium, 133 mg zinc, and 5 mg zinc. I take one tab 3 times daily, though I will take 2 tabs sometimes if the pain gets really tough. I think the NADH (5 mg, first thing a.m.) may be the more active supplement for the pain, but the cal/mag/zinc has enhanced it noticeably, especially in the evening when the pain is usually the worst. Watch out for the gastro-blast effect if you take too much magnesium, it will cause you to lose more nutrients than you take in. You might want to look at some of the posts between Larry Hoover and Johnj further up, they have some interesting info on magnesium.

Oh, and I am wondering if the zinc may be the PMDD helper. Some one long ago suggested zinc for PMDD and I blew it off, thinking I might get more relief from antidepressant therapy. Turns out I don't tolerate ADs well. Wish I'd tried the zinc advice sooner. Best of luck to you with the muscle pain issues, it sure can be a real burden.

A couple more things

I still have some transient knots and pain even with the NADH and cal/mag/zinc, but transient is such a wonderfully welcome improvement over constant. I think, for me, pulling my benighted head out of my butt and quitting smoking and gently increasing exercise along with the supplements might take care of the knots/pain more completely. Please be aware that I've only been taking the supplement for a little under a month, and I'm a poster child for poop-out, but this is still the best relief I've found.

Also, acupuncture has worked well for immediate, but sadly temporary pain relief.

Thanks very much. Very appreciated !!! (nm)
