Is there anyone out there who lives in the UK who has had trouble getting a diagnoses and treatment for cyclothymia? I was so relieved when I came across this condition a few months ago, because I didn't even know it existed, but it was so obviously me. However my GP told me that in the UK they don't 'believe' in it. He referred me for a psychiatric assessment anyway, which I finally had recently, and they want to put me on anti-depressants, 'just to see if it works'. This is after I explained what I thought was wrong with me and what I needed. I know the NHS is an unwieldy inefficient beast, but there must be some help that I can get from it. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? What can I do?

Hi Anna- I also have cyclothymia but I live in the states. That's weird that they don't believe in it. Here is what I take: 40mg Prozac, 300mg Lithium (is supposed to make the Prozac work better), and 50mg Seroquel for sleep. I was just diagnosed 2 months ago. I am still working on my meds with my pdoc. If you have any other questions, feel free. Good luck.

Thanks for your post Jill. Basically no one I have seen seems to know much about cyclothymia or what to do about it. The psychiatrist has suggested Citalopram which is an anti-depressant. I suppose its the same for dysthymia - there's just been no research done over here.
Did your doctor come up with the diagnosis of cyclothymia, and suggest what you should go on, or did you have to ask for certain drugs? My doctor said if I come up with something which I think would help, he would prescribe it if it is available here and if it isn't addictive. Basically I feel that I have to do my own research in to what I should be taking because none of the professionals seem to know!

Hi Anna- My doc figured it out on my first visit. I was diagnosed with depression by a previous doc. We have been working with meds for almost 2 months. Right now I take 40mg Prozac, 300mg Lithium, and 50mg Seroqel for sleep only. I do a lot of my own research on the net too. It never hurts. Good luck.
