Lexapro - can you quit it cold turkey?

Posted by Joanie on March 18, 2003, at 15:29:55

I am sick and tired of taking meds and would absolutely love to stop them all! I've gained weight (35 Lbs) in the last year and a half. It sucks. That makes me depressed all by itself! I take Lexapro, clonazepam, and hormone replacement therapy. I know I can't stop the hormones (total hysterectomy), but the others, I'm almost willing to risk depression in order to lose weight, and just SEE if I can feel better on my on. Can you just stop Lexapro? I know you can Prozac because I did. Help! Thanks!

I quit cold turkey on the advice of my doctor and then started buspar. I experienced dizziness, nausea, irritability, depersonalization, etc. These symptoms were not as bad as when I went off Paxil but similiar and lasted about 2 weeks. You might want to taper instead of quitting cold turkey.

Personally, I wouldn't. I stopped Celexa (it's cousin med) cold turkey and ended up in the hospital. Stopping cold turkey also really puts your body and brain in shock and will definately affect your mood. I would taper if I were you.
