Hi all- My doc raised my Prozac up 10mg from 30-40. Before when I went up to 40mg I got terrible anxiety. I also just started 300mg Lithium and day. I guess it is supposed to make the Prozac work better? Anyways I did in the past take 0.25mg Xanex as needed for anxiety. I haven't needed it thank good for about two months. I have some leftover. Should I take one? I can't reach my pdoc. I have never had a problem with benzos, but mt doc wants me to not take them. I don't know why? This anxiety is horrible. I was at the grocery store when my heart felt like it was going to jump out of my body. So I don't know if the anxiety is from the Prozac or the Lithium. Don't you hate how you start a new med and have to take another for the side effects. This sucks. I am having dinner tonight at a friends house and I don't want to be so anxious. I know self medicating is no no, but in this case is it OK? Thanks.

try diazapam benzo quicker and last longer and is safer and works well on anxiety!

I know I'm posting this after you needed an answer, and it doesn't really answer your question, merely comments on it. I just don't think it's a good idea for anyone here to tell you to take something without you really checking with your medical person. I feel your pain and I know you had problems getting in touch with this person. You will find a lot of suggestions regarding dosing and what to take here. I know we are here for support and such, but anything other than personal stories or a *maybe you could do this, but check with your doctor* is really ill advised. Prehaps if people had medical related licenses they would understand better what a problem this can run into. I know you didn't ask for my *political statement* on this. But your question really got me to looking at what people are really asking for.... stuff they should be asking a prescribing person, in my opinion. Your question was a good one and considering how people answer, I understand why you asked it here. I'm sorry for your difficulties and really hope you worked and are working it out.

I'm shocked that you have no way to get in touch with your doctor. I'd seriously consider finding a new psychiatrist. Meanwhile, put an emergency call through to your GP and ask her. If you find you can't get in contact with any medical professional, you could go to the ER, but that is not likely to be a fun experience.
Your doctor may have good reason for not wanting you to take benzos (unlikely but possible). If you can't get professional help I think it would be safe to take some xanax. It is a very safe drug, and almost certainly better than alcohol for instance.
Feel Better,
Britt

A lot of docs are all freaky about benzos..."Addiction" they shreik. They're no better informed than Joe on the street, because people with legitimate anxiety disorder need benzos the way diabetics need insulin. Nobody says anything about addiction to diabetics, do they?
That said, are you diagnosed with an anxiety disorder?
And lithium to goose up Prozac? Why ? We have Trileptal now. And much better drugs than Prozac, which causes anxiety in some people. Get a new shrink. Nobody on call is inexcusable. I understand needing permission to use the Xanax, I did the same thing myself for years. Somebody should be on call to help you at all times.
I know it's too late for the immediate problem, but I think you are trying to be responsible and deserve better care than that.missliz
