I rang the manafacturer today (Link Pharmaceuticals). Since Nardil was taken of the PBS a lot of people changed to PARNATE. Chemists (ignorantly) told people to ween off Nardil and get ready to change meds. Well guess what... it is still available under the Special Access Scheme. Ask your doc and get back on it.
If you were on it before you will have no probs.
All Aussies, even not MAOI users, spread this news NOW!!
I'm in the process of emailing the health department in Australian to try to get it back on the PBS. I will really bother those slack public servants! (No offense to anyone on the site who is a pub servant!)
Get your asses into top gear NOW!
Ace.

hey ace...perhaps the reason you need such a high dose of Nardil is because of bioequivalence problems....
"Nardil® (phenelzine) - August 2002. Pfizer is no longer supplying Nardil tablets. However, Link Pharmaceuticals in Auckland (ph: 09 358 7146, fax: 09 358 7340) advise that they can supply phenelzine tablets pursuant to Section 29 of the Medicines Act 1981. Please note that the phenelzine product from Link Pharmaceuticals is not yet approved by Medsafe, therefore its bioequivalence to Nardil is unknown."

Hi Ace.
Are you taking any mood stabilizers? Have you ever demonstrated manic or hypomanic mood-states?I have become psychotically manic while taking Nardil. I have never had a single manic episode without the involvement of an MAOI. Whether it is necessary for one to be truly bipolar for this to occur is debatable, but antidepressant-induced mania seems to occur in otherwise non-bipolar presentations.
I have been on 120mg of Nardil.

NO NEVER. And I have never ever ever demonstrated ANY manic or HYPOMANIC states. I have a ton of anxiety d/o. Nardil has made VERY happy - not manic.> I have become psychotically manic while taking Nardil. I have never had a single manic episode without the involvement of an MAOI. At 60mg I was doing great. At 90mg even greater. It's only so high because of my severe OCD.
All the Best,
Ace.

I envy your elation, Ace. Hopefully, my time will come soon.
I do think it is important to monitor liver function as Nardil can be a burden on it. Hopefully, your doctor will know what tests are necesssary. I imagine a full liver enzyme screening would be enough.
Are you having a problem with your supply of Nardil? What's the story? Is Marplan available down under? Although it is a member of the hydrazine class, as is Nardil, it is much less taxing on the liver. Although Marplan is often described as being a "weaker Nardil", when the drug works, it can produce just as robust a response as Nardil for depression. I have no idea how it compares for OCD however.
Besides SSRIs, MAOIs, and Anafranil, what other drugs are used for treating OCD?
Thanks.
