Hi all, well, I am on week 1 of going back on Effexor-XR and lately I have felt a lot of nausea-bad. I was the one who complained about hip pain too. I went down to 25mg of my Lamictal instead of the 50mg at night. NO MORE HIP PAIN. Anyone have any opinion on the Lamictal decrease and my hip pain disappearing? However, I am getting nauseated and just feel "weird" like tired, sleepy, but alert. I spent the whole day planning for my graduation-classes, course outline, etc. etc. Does this make sense? I'm worried. I haven't taken Lamictal since May 2002, and I'm on day 6 of it now. I still don't have much of an appetite, but I'm sleeping okay-I guess. When I was on Effexor-XR before, I took it in the am. I am on my third night of taking it at bedtime. I feel nauseas:-( what is going on? Please advice?
Thank you,
Kristen

Krissy,
Your nausea could be a combination of things, but one of them may be because you re-started Effexor XR. That drug is known to cause nausea as a side effect, I had that too when I first started it over 3.5 months ago. It has since subsided, thank god~
I don't know anything really about Lamictal, though. Make sure to keep hydrated (drink water, it's good for you!) and eat small meals that you can tolerate.
Good luck, A

Hi,
I felt quite ill when I started Celexa. It lasted for about a week, then subsided. I used OTC motion-sickness medication (Dramamine) when it was bad or ginger teas and ginger candy when it was slight. I started taking the drugs with food which helped too.
Feel better!

Thanks :-)I've slipped from drinking at least 6 cups of water a day to maybe 2 and diet or regular soda-not good I know. I hope the nausea subsides. *crossing my fingers*
Thanks for your support.

Hi KrissyP. Your hip pain experience caught my eye as I may have had a similar side effect with Seroquel.
I was taking Seroquel 25-50 mg for sleep. I had it available to take in the daytime as needed. On a few occasions I took 100mg and fell asleep. I woke up with horrible hip pain that lasted each time for approximately one day. This happened consistently enough to make me suspect the Seroquel. I had never had that pain before and have not had it since.
Just letting you know it could have been the Lamictal. Hang in there.

Hi, Thanks so much for this-I am still kind of nauseas, but I am going to try the ginger tea. I'm glad the nausea subsided with you on Celexa. I was on that med too, and it went well, can't remember why I went off.
Thanks again:-)

Hey Krissy... I had almost the same effect when I first started on Effexor. I found that in order to fight off the nausea, drink LOTS of water... not just 6 cups, or the recommended 8 cups, but as much as you could possibly need. I found that when the Effexor was going into my system it was dehydrating the Hell out of me.Second, take it with meals.... Whenever you're going to have supper, eat, and then right after take your Effexor. Also, try eating a little bit several times a day. Like breakfast, lunch, maybe a snack or two, and supper. I found that the more I ate, the less sick I felt. I know, weird... The only problem with that was that I was forcing myself to eat because Effexor seemed to take away a lot of my appetite.
But with food and LOTS of water I was able to get through it untill the Effexor was safely into my system. I remember the worst days being days 6-10 after starting your initial dose, and any few days after increasing or decreasing the dose. Just the fun of taking Effexor I guess...

Krissy, when I've been nauseous no matter what causes it, I found that ginger helped every time. Sometimes the nausea was so bad (discontinuing SSRIs) that I ate ginger straight. Ginger tea wasn't nearly strong enough.
It burns your mouth if you just take a bite out (like I did the first time). What I did was take a few small thin slices & dice them into very small pieces. Then I'd toss the pieces into my mouth & wash them down with a drink, followed by a small bite of apple to make sure no pieces got stuck in my throat. The chewed apple piece pushed any stuck pieces down.
I found with nausea I had trouble sawllowing pills or tiny pieces of ginger. I used to gag lots otherwise. I did the ginger twice a day as long as I needed it. It was the ONLY thing that worked.

OMIGOD! I was just telling my friend today that I was dehydrated as Hell LOL I downed a 32 oz 1/2 diet 1/2 regular soda. I need to cop a squat and start realizing that 8 cups a day of water will do me wonders-I have a hard time applying the knowledge about diet and exercise-it's like I feel I don't deserve to be healthy, or succeed. I'd like to take your advice about taking it with dinner, but what happens is when I first take the Effexor, I get sleepy, then after about an hour or two, I get hyper, so I would be getting hyper right about the time I go to bed. BUT, last night I took my Effexor at about 9pm and went to bed about 11, and slept like a baby, didn't wake during the night at all, and before I knew it-it was morning. I also took the Lamictal and Seroquel though. I may try tonight to see if taking the Effexor at dinner helps the nausea-if you see a lot of posts by me tomorrow-you'll know I was up late because I did get hyper from taking the effexor at dinner:-)
but it's worth a shot.
Thanks for the help and the advice,
Kristen

Hi there,
Thanks-ginger straight? wow-I barely touch the stuff when I go out for sushi-but I will try this. I agree-sometimes teas aren't potent enough-but maybe I could start out with the tea?
Great idea you gave me:-)

Hi there,
My hip pain is gone. I have to say (although this may sound odd to some here-don't know) that I took a trial of Provera to start my period because I have very irregular ones. I think it was from that OR I also decreased my lamictal from 50mg to 25mg. So, I don't know-I'm just glad the hip pain is gone-never had it that bad-it was like my hip BONE not a muscle. Oh well.
You say at the end of your post-"Just letting you know it could have been the Lamictal".-did you mean Seroquel after you were just telling me about the effect Seroquel had and YOUR hip pain?? :-) Just wondering. I had very similar pain that you speak of here with Seroquel when I FIRST started taking it. But never again while continuing. Thanks for your kind post:-)

I found that the Effexor only made me hyper for maybe the first 6-10 days of being on it. It does go away with time. But besides that, I would really be baffled if the Clonazepam and the Seroquel were not enough to battle the hyperness of the Effexor. But taking it right after you eat, so that it can digest with your food, always seemed to help me.
And with getting it into your blood... remember that 8 cups a day of water is just about enough to flush your system right out... meaning that any of the "leftovers" of Effexor will come out with the water... then the good active chemicals would be more quickly absorbed into your system.
What a little studying can do when you're having really bad side effects to medication, huh?

Hi KrissyP. I am so glad your pain is gone. Yeah, I do think it was more like bone pain than a muscle type of thing.
I knew you were on the lamictal and just wanted to mention my Seroquel experience to show that bone pain can occur with meds. I wasn't clear, sorry about that. My pain came only when I increased the dose on an as needed basis. Otherwise I am a big fan of Seroquel. Very beneficial for me. I am on a trial of Abilify now.
I sure hope it goes well for you. Glad you are posting.

Thanks so much laurarn I've had "bone/joint pain" with a lot of these psych meds-I'm just glad it went away. Is Abilify in the states? or is it new? What does it do? Never heard of it.
I'm glad that Seroquel helps you. Thank you for your kindness and I hope your trial goes well also:-)So glad you're posting too.
