Fish oil--another question

Posted by noa on March 1, 2003, at 22:56:44

OK, every so often there are these questions of an indelicate nature, and I can't beleive I'm writing them, but here goes:

I've been posting about my positive experiences with fish oil. But one thing that has developed that is sometimes bothersome is that it seems to make bowel movements hard, and gives slight constipation. Very slight. But this is extremely unusual for me--first time in my life as it usually tends the other way. So in a way, it is good because there are not so many trips to bathroom, more predictable, etc. Mostly, I don't mind, but every so often it is a bit uncomfortable.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this effect.

Thanks.

I was pondering about buying fish oil capsules tonight, but I didn't. Can't we just eat a lot of the great-tasting fish out there like salmon, and/or sushi-I love it but I could understand people who don't. Can't we get the same omega 3 fatty acids that are in these "fish pills"????
Just a thought........

Absolutely! It's much better to eat fish than to take fish oil capsules. Whole fish contain nutrients that are lacking in fish oil capsules. They're high in taurine, a good source of DMAE, and supply selenium (there aren't many good sources of selenium). It also seems to emerging that fish protein has beneficial effects when compared to other protein sources (e.g. soy), even when adjusted for specific amino acid content. Fish protein gives reduced post-prandial (after meal) triglycerides and glucose levels compared to other proteins.

You'd need to eat about 200 grams of salmon to give the equivalent amount of EPA that is often recommended (about 1 gram).

But, there's another beneficial effect of eating whole fish vs. using fish oil capsules. Whole fish will generally substitute for some other food, e.g. meat. That other food will be high in long-chain omega-6 fatty acids, so you're also helping to balance your omega-6:omega-3 intake ratio when you eat whole fish. Capsules would generally just be taken with a meal.

I haven't noticed that.

I do try to eat fish fairly often, but there is no way I could eat enough fish to get the amount of omega-3's I am getting from the supplement. Plus, I was already eating the fish when I added the supplement and within a week of adding the supplement, I noticed significant mood improvement.

Plus, I have a question. I have learned that if fish oil is heated, it is no longer as effective. So, with eating fish, does the omega-3 in fish survive the cooking process?
