Xanax THerapeutic Dose

Posted by LibbyH on February 25, 2003, at 22:14:52

I'm taking meds for major depression & ADD. Doc says I will be on some kind of AD meds the rest of my life probably.

My husband has Bipolar II (dysphoric type) and Panic Disorder. He's been takin Xanax for panic disorder for about three months now. When he started, he was taking a couple of milligrams a day as needed. Now he takes as many as 10-20 milligrams a day. This has me really worried. His speech is slurred. He has no memory, concentration, or motivation. I questionedf him about the number of pills he is taking & he showed me a web site that said up to 10 tabs a day for panic disorder, but that just seems like a LOT of pills to me & he's already so doped up that he barely even functions anymore.

He gets very angry at the mention of giving up Xanax. I figure he is probably addicted. I've heard horror stories of people on Xanax inadvertently overdosing & dying! Can anyone tell me if 10-20 mg/day is a therapeutic dose for a 200 pound man with Bipolar II/dysphoric type & panic disorder? Also, I feel this is something I should bring up with his doc, but when I do, I'm afraid the doc will put him in the hospital & I'll have to be the bad guy.
Thanks,
L.

Indeed it is a huge dose and if he stays on it for long time, it could be very very hard or impossible to come back or even reduce the dosage. Overdosing Xanax alone will not kill, but if combined with other medications or alcohol, the effect can sometimes be deadly. I am not writing to scare you, but the maximum approved dose of Xanax for panic disorder is around 6 to 8 mg. Take him to the nearest hospital and don't waste time. The sooner the treatment begins, better it is.
Good luck to you and your Hus. Take care, act very soon please!

Have you ever been able to see the dosage specs on his Rx bottle? It should say how much he,s suppose to be taking and when.If it is not written on the bottle or you aren,t able to see it,you can always talk to the pharmacy where he gets his meds filled and ask the pharmacist what the dosage is.They can be a big help.Based on what the pharmacist tells you, then you can call his dr. and tell him what,s going on.That way you won,t really be the "bad guy"right in his face.He may react in an unpleasant manner,if he,s a bit "loopy" from the pills.Just play it cool!festus
