My pdoc just gave me a sample of Provigil. He said is used for narcolepsy. I have cyclothymia and I take Seroquel at night for sleep. Every day since I have been so down and lethargic. He said to try this. He also upped my Prozac from 20mg to 30mg. What does this stuff do? How does it make you feel? Any tips please. Thanks.

Provigil can be great for increasing energy and motivation. I took it for a while for ADD; it didn't help enough there but it did increase my energy level and confidence without causing anxiety. I have a friend who's bipolar and finds some of the meds too sedating. I suggested Provigil -- he talked to his pdoc, who was enthusiastic about it, and the results have been very positive.
Some people also find it effective as an antidepressant; you might look up some of IsoM's posts on this. All in all, it can be very helpful for some people. I'd just go slow on the dosing (start at 25-50 mg), especially if you're prone to anxiety.

My doc prescribed it because all I want to do was sleep all day secondary to depression. Also I was falling asleep at the wheel and was worried I would crash my car.

I use Provigil regularly & have for close to a year. I originally asked my doctor for it to treat my narcolepsy. It did nothing to help me stay awake & alert but I did find it an *excellent* add-on along with Celexa as an AD. I brightens my mood immensely & provides motivation. I feel a quiet & deep contentment with it. No side effects whatsoever. Because of Provigil, this winter, I managed to get through a pile of stress fairly well despite having SAD too.
Unlike others, I never did notice an immediate effect that many mention. It was a week before I noticed anything & over the next 2 weeks, life looked progressively brighter. Full benefits took a couple of months & have remained at that level. I highly recommend trying it for any able to afford it. I, fortunately, have union coverage that pays for it.

I've tried Provigil. It had paradoxical reactions for me. At first it would pep me up, but then it was followed by an extreme exhaustion phase where I could hardly walk. Tolerance built up fast. I could see though that it could have benefits for someone else.
I much prefer Provigil's ancestor, which is Adrafinil. It is far cheaper and, to me, way more effective for energy and anhedonic depression.

So it is you! John, because I originally came to PB to check out the effects of adrafinil when I read that Provigil was used for narcolepsy & I couldn't get it. I decided to try for adrafinil instead. It was your posts on it that made me decide to try it. I'm thankful for all the info you posted about it then! I now use Provigil which I prefer, as adrafinil (Olmifon) was too costly ordering it overseas. My union pays for the Provigil so it's essentially free for me.

Aren't there also concerns about liver damage with Adrafinil? My understanding was that periodic liver function tests were recommended with this drug, but not modafinil.

John:
About the expense, do you live where you can get Adrafinil locally, or do you order from overseas?I had to order long-distance since I live in the U.S., just wondering about your situation.
