As an antoxidant it may protects brain cells from damage from other drugs. Example: it is recommended on The DXM FAQ as an aid to preventing brain damage (Ollney's Lesions). I have never taken it all by itself.

BTW, re doses - the usual consumer packaging in 30mg caps, to be taken twice a day, may be FAR too
light for protecting brain cells when other drugs are being taken that have harmful potential. I ran across a research article on the web on treating Parkinson's disease with CO Q-10. They used doses of 300, 600 and 1200mg, and found significant improvent at each level over thr previous one.

I tried CO Q10 awhile for brain fog. It may have helped a little. I got a little healthy feeling in my head from it - may have just been in forehead. Some claim it works a bit like ginko but longer. Michael73

That's an interesting question. I do know that deficiencies of this vitamin-like substance have been linked to periodontal disease, diabetes, and muscular dystrophy.

Some health care professionals use it to treat schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. Coenzyme Q10 has the ability to counter histamine, which is found in high levels in people with schizophrenia.

For heart health I take Coenzyme Q10 along with alpha-lipoic acid (a poweful antioxidant which aids in the absorption of coenzyme Q10), and pantothenic acid (vitamin B). Coenzyme A is a substance manufactured in the body from pantothenic acid. Some studies suggest that coenzyme A may be more beneficial than coenzyme Q10.

My husband says coQ10 gives him vivid dreams if he takes it too late in the day.

A very good brand is Twinsorb CoQ10, from Twinlab. Not all coenzyme Q 10 is made equal--softgels are more assimilated than tablet form.

Just thought you'd want to know this extra info.

Take care.

Do you mean you've never taken CoQ10 or DXM by itself?

Or that you've only taken CoQ10 with DXM.

I meant that I've only taken CoQ10 with DXM. I started taking the CoQ (300mg) with it after reading about the potential risk of high doses of DXM taken frequently.

BTW, DXM in sufficient doses is a very powerful A/D, similar to Wellbutrin in its effects. Unfortunately, the side effects are a bit peculiar - low doses (up to about 200mg) are merely mildly stimulating. but as you increase the dose it becomes a psychedelic of the "dissociative" type.

I would not advise anyone to take DXM as an A/D, because of the side-effects and risk of brain damage. Nevertheless, after several months on regular AD's with little success in breaking out of my isolating, do-nothing depression, I stopped my regular ADs and took an average of about 600 mg DXM for 6 days. It was like a kick-start - 1 day of absolute mania, but highly productive, gradually calming down. From that day forward (having resumed my regular ADs) I have continued to progress on all fronts.

If anyone wants to discuss this further, I suggest it should be a new thread.
